Hi-
I finally got my appetite back last night and dragged my husband to our local sushi bar. Although I was craving the raw stuff, I stuck with the veggie rolls and miso soup....that is until I came upon the spider roll. For those of you who don't know the spider, it's cooked crab, avocado, sprouts, rice, seaweed and tobiko (fish eggs). My question- is tobiko okay to eat? I should have asked before b/c I already ate it...ha! I was so ravenous from not eating in 6 weeks that I went crazy. I asked my waitress and she told me that Japanese pregnant woman eat sushi all the time, but that it was ultimately up to me. I know that the raw fish is not a great idea, but was wondering if anyone could tell me about the tobiko?
Thanks!
Re: Question for those who love sushi
If you've eaten there before, and never had a problem, you should be fine.
I eat cooked fish and veggie sushi, without the tobiko, because that is my comfort level. But I'm sure you're fine.

You're fine. If you've never been sick before, you're okay. Just go to a reputable place and chow down on that sushi!
Before I was pregnant, I'd eat sushi 2-3 times a month. In the beginning I was scared and stuck to cooked rolls, but would grab a roll or two of the raw ones off my husband's plate. A couple nights ago I just caved and got my usual raw rolls. The restauraunt is always busy, I've never been sick there, and the chance of risk is super low.
I actually didn't start eating sushi until I was pg with DD! I stuck to the California roll (cooked crab, cucumber, & avocado) and veggie rolls.
Sidenote - now I am craving sushi... I might have to change my lunch plans!

Sushi is craving #1 for me. I eat about 1/2 cooked and 1/2 raw when I go. I've been eating sushi at the same place for years, pretty frequently, and I've never been sick. I do try to avoid the tuna rolls due to mercury. Sushi is a great way to get your DHA... especially if you can't eat cooked fish due to food aversions.
And FYI - california rolls are not made from crab.. they use imitation crab that is basically cod that has been dyed and formed to look like crab... but it is cooked.
They make it with real crab at our favorite place. It's one of their signature items. It's yummy!
I would kill for raw sushi after reading this thread. Seriously it is my favorite thing ever.
The spider roll is my absolute favorite!!! I wish we were going to be in town this weekend, so I can go get some.
I don't think the tobikko would have the parasites raw fish might, and it's on the low end of the mercury list. Eat it up! The health department requirements for fish and shellfish are so strict, I don't worry about sushi.
Yes yes! I've had sushi about 4 times now. I can't wait. Like PP said, I've been eating the cooked mostly and I did have some what you mentioned, OP. I go to my regular places only. Tomorrow we will be going to a new place with friends and I will only be eating cooked rolls.
Is it just me, or do we need a giant sushi outing in May? Bring out the raw rolls. I'm going to tear it up!
Same here.
We had a "sushi date" planned with friends right after I found out I was pregnant. I (mostly) avoided the raw sushi because we were making it at home and I don't trust that the grocery store's fish is on the same level as the sushi restaurants we go to. I did steal a piece of my husband's plate though. It was too much to resist.
This!

I *so* wish we could have a sushi outing in May. How fun would that be? :-) I actually brought up wanting a sushi date after the baby's here. The best sushi around here is about 3 hours away, though. *Sigh* Something to plan for, at least!
Mac and cheese lover!
I've been sticking to the cooked stuff - I also avoid sprouts in general. As the first person who replied said, if you've never had any problems, I wouldn't worry. I just try to follow the guidelines about which types of fish/quantities. It is so frustrating that the only things I want to eat are things I'm not "supposed" to have.
