Is this doable?

I have a checkup with the OBGYN tomorrow -- just a regular, check the heartbeat, get weighed, get a flu shot type of appointment. Do you think it's OK if I bring DS? I usually don't like bringing him to stuff like this, but I'm stuck. If I reschedule, I won't be able to go back for almost 2 weeks.

ETA: he's 4

  • I thinks it's ok, it's not like your getting an internal or anything.

  • Yep.  I had to bring DS to my internal checkup at 36 weeks.  I downloaded an episode of Spongebob on my ipod (yes, Spongebob) and had him sit in the chair while I was examined.  He did fine.

  • I would take him.  I actually read that it is good for them to go to some appointments and hear the heartbeat.  My ds just went to my growth us and loved it.

  • I brought my DS with me to all of my OB appointments, inc. internals.  You should be fine.
  • I took DD1 to most of my OB appointments while pg and it was fine. She was only two at the time. The appointments only last a few minutes so just bring a snack and a book for him.
  • I have taken both my kids many times to the OB.  It is fine.
  • I had to bring my daughter to most of my appts when I was pregnant with her sister.  It was never a problem at all.

  • My OBGYN is very firm on this, if you are bringing your kids you need to have someone there with you to watch them as they want you to be fully involved in the appointment.

However at 4 years he should be able to sit there quietly and behave, so I really don't see an issue with taking him with you.

  • Absolutely. DD1 came to most of my appointments bc she wanted to hear the baby. I think she also liked the books in the exam rooms.

  • My boys are pretty wild, and the wait can be ridiculous at my OB's office...so I avoid it if at all possible (actually I would beg DH to meet me there at a minimum to take the boys, or would probably reschedule).  I always schedule on preschool days, that was one of my reasons for starting to try to get pregnant when we did, ha :)

However, if it was just my older DS, he would probably be ok with lots of snacks, my iphone, and some toys.  The little one is just still way too into everything, and the little one riles the big one up even if he would have behaved otherwise, so I wouldn't take them both.

  • My OB's office is fine with this. My OB actually really likes it. She said its nice for soon to be older siblings to hear the heartbeat and feel a little more involved. She also likes it to see the babies she delivered grow up :-)

  • I brought my 3 year old and 1 year old to several appointments, including internals.  It wasn't a big deal at all.
