Chicago outside wedding (NBR)

I will be going to an outside wedding the last weekend of October in Chicago. I am going to assume that it will be pretty cold, but I am not sure. What should I wear? Can I wear a cocktail type dress with black tights or will that look stupid. Or should I just wear pants. I've never worn pants to a wedding before. DH has it so easy.. Pants, shirt, tie.... All done...

Re: Chicago outside wedding (NBR)

  • I wore thick tights to a wedding in Vermont in September.  I also wore boots, a jacket and colorful scarf with my dress.  You have to stay warm or else you'll be miserable and we know you can't drink to help stay warm!

  • Personally, I would wear a sweater type dress, with thick tights-like nylons and some higher boots with a longer type coat...Chicago isn't called the Windy City for nothing haha

  • I live in South Dakota (so very similar climate).  By late October, it can be a raging blizzard or hot outside, but most likely it will be cold (or at least chilly).  I would wear something with layers - like a dress with warm tights a jacket and scarf. Pants would be fine, too - and probably more comfortable.

Also, if you live in a warmer climate, consider the fact that we mid-westerners sometimes are more used to cold, so bring more/warmer layers than what others may be wearing.  For example, I live close to a major university, and you can always tell the out-of-staters, because they are bundled up in winter coats in September, and complaining that is is too cold ... they have a rude awakening come December.  In contrast, I am still in flip flops and t-shirts until December or January.

  • Depends what kind of wedding, but I probably would stay away from pants unless you can really dress them up.  We live in the Chicago burbs and last year for Halloween it was cold, but the year before that it was really hot (like around 80).  I would get a dress and either nylons or thicker tights depending on the forecast, plus a coverup jacket of some sort and you'll be set.  Is the entire ceremony/reception outdoors?
