hi! i just saw your post about taking vitamin d3 for your migraines. does that really work? i've never heard that before.
i'm petrified of how i'll be during pregnancy. right now, i take elavil (which is an old school anti-depressant also used to prevent migraines) daily as a preventative and maxalt when i do get them. but, of course, i can't take any of that while TTC or while PG.
Re: *butterfly6381*
Hey! My migraines started daily the day before Halloween last year, which lined up with my 1st PP period. The continued daily until sometime in April, when they died down to 4-5 a week. I agree with Morgan, Tylenol with codeine works really well, but I couldn't safely take it that often, especially while BF'ing. My pain level was consistently between a 6 and an 8 on any given day. I wasn't happy with my prescribed preventative at all. I had a lot of side effects. So I started researching CAMs. In researching a healthier lifestyle (staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, eating more organics, etc) I kept seeing Vitamin D mentioned. I had a casual conversation with a nutritionist, and he asked if my Vitamin D levels had been checked. Emerging research shows people who experience chronic pain have low levels of Vitamin D according to him. So I decided just to try taking vitamins. I take 1200 IU of Vitamin D3 and a B Complex, plus a daily multivitamin. I started this in July, and also started weening off of teh daily preventative. I have averaged 4 headaches a month since August - and maybe 1 or 2 of them has been deabilitating. I've always had headaches/ migraines, but never to the extent I experienced PP. I'm not currently on any horomonal BC, so I expect to have headaches with my cycle. I'm happy with the results, though its not really that scientific of an approach. FWIW, my stress level has maybe gone down a notch or two since last year, so that isn't a major contributing factor. The other key factor for me is staying really well hydrated. Looking back, I don't think I did this well enough while bf'ing.
The only trigger I can not 'manage' is major sudden changes in the weather, but even those are as bad as they used to be. (Pain to the extent I had to focus on just breathing and could not function otherwise.)
Since this is working, I haven't tried a new daily preventative. ::Knock on wood:: things stay the same. Otherwise I may try the one Morgan & Esther suggested.
HTH : )
thanks to all three of you for the info!
morgan, you were next on my list of people to talk migraines while PG with!
