Success after IF

Femara and/or unmedicated are a no-go for us!

I called and asked RE's office about the possibility of trying Femara instead of Clomid w/ Dexamethasone since I didn't respond to the 100mg of Clomid, but the nurse shot me down.  She said I'd have a better chance of O'ing on the higher dose of Clomid in addition to the Dexamethasone than with Femara.  She said if I don't O on Clomid, chances are I won't on Femara either.  I then suggested that we do an unmedicated cycle since prior to starting this cycle with Clomid, I have always O'ed just fine regularly on my own. I told the nurse that I feel like my cycle is all out of whack now and I just don't feel like myself.  She said that since I didn't O with Clomid this cycle, they wouldn't recommend me trying an unmedicated cycle.  WTF?  How can I go into this with a regular cycle and no known issues myself and now be told this?  I don't get it.  I hopped on this roller coaster with the impression that our worry was getting one little swimmer to my egg.  I just thought it was an added bonus to increase our chances by giving me meds to help me produce more than my typical lonesome target.  I'm just very frustrated right now and need to get it off of my chest!  It's hard for me to be hopeful with Clomid after it completely wiped out my O altogether!  Do I need to shut my mouth and let them do their job or should I fight this issue?   I've had people tell me that they didn't respond to Clomid, but did to Femara.  I've also read articles about Femara being a great alternative for Clomid resistant women.  Why the contradiction from the nurse?  What's wrong with an unmedicated cycle other than it only giving one target?  I'd rather have one than none...which is what being on Clomid has given me.

  • I don't understand why/how your nurse gets to make these comments.  I would think it would be up to your doc. to determine what is best, and she sounds whack!

  • This time around I barely responded to Clomid, and tried Femara, and produced more follicles on it...so how would she know?

  • You don't have to take what they prescribe! ;)  Or you can go elsewhere if that's an option.

I left my first RE back in early 2007 in large part because he wouldn't prescribe Femara.  I saw my OB once before getting in with my new RE; my OB prescribed Femara and the RE said he would have done the same.

I totally disagree with them not listening to your wishes. :(  REs should *always* listen if you want to take fewer meds, for goodness sake, esp. for women who know their bodies, whose bodies are mostly doing what they're supposed to, and who have done their research.  Personally I think Femara rocks, and indeed it frequently works for women who don't respond to clomid.

Personally that's enough to make me switch REs, but if if that can't happen, you don't have to take what they prescribe. :)

  • I would either call back and insist on talking to the doctor or find a new doctor.

My ob/gyn was willing to prescribe clomid for me but not femara.  My RE is willing to prescribe femara.  There is tons of literature out there that says femara can work for women when clomid didn't so I disagree with your nurse.  I know some docs don't like using femara since it is a breast cancer drug so using it as a fertility drug is an off label use, however, I think at this point it's pretty well accepted as a fertility drug.

Also, if you feel as though your body is out of whack and you need a break, by all means, do an unmedicated cycle.  It's your money, your body and your choice.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I would either start looking elsewhere or insist that you want to try Femara. My RE doesn't even prescribe Clomid at all anymore unless someone specifically wants to try it--they go right to Femara.

  • I didn't respond on Clomid and went to Femara quickly because of immediate lining issues Clomid caused.

Femara is a breeze compared to Clomid and I highly recommend it!

  • Some REs prefer to NOT use Femara.  I have had good luck with it, but I also never used Clomid.

BTW, there is a coupon for a free 1 month supply of Femara on the internet right now.  Femara is kind of expensive, but 30 pills will last you longer than one IUI cycle.

See my sigi for my recent IUI cycle.  Basically, I'm a poor responder.  We did Femara and 300 IU follistim with an hcG trigger.

Have they considered a ovulation trigger for your cycles?

Trying to conceive #2 since May 2006.
