Alabama Babies

OB appointment today

So today I am going in for my appointment. They asked at my last one if I wanted to test to see if the baby had anything wrong. (ex: downs syndrome, ect.) While I am on the fence about the test, it wouldn't change anything about my pregnancy. So my question is did you have the test (sorry I don't remember the name of the test)?

Like I said if it came back positive I would not terminate the pregnany, DH and I are 100% sure of that.

Re: OB appointment today

  • No, I did not have the test with either of my pregnancies.  I felt the same as you, it was not going to make me terminate, and the test has a very high rate of false positives.

If I was high risk (over 35, etc.) then maybe I would have done something differently.

    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • We didn't have the NT Scan (I think that's the one you're referring to) done either.  DH and I were the same as y'all, it wouldn't have changed a thing for us.  Looking back, I kind of wish we had done it, though, as it's another ultrasound and another time we could've seen our sweet baby.

This.  I've several friends who did this and had false positives.  All it did was stress them out further.

  • I didn't do the test either.  If I were 35 or older (which I'll likely be if we decided to have another) I will do it.
  • DH and I chose to forgo this test because of the likelihood of false positive and the fact that we weren't willing to do amnio if our quad screening came back positive.

  • I didnt know it had such a high rate for false positives. I think I'm not going to do it, all the cons outweight the pros in this situation. Thanks for your input!

  • Exactly what the other ladies said.  We didn't get the test done either because of the risk of false positives and the fact that it wouldn't change anything.  Like another poster said, I might be 35 or older by the next kid (if we have another) and I might opt for it then.
  • With these tests, all they can do is give you the RISK that something is wrong-not anything definitive yet. They could say for example, "well, it looks like Baby has x . Y % of babies with x end up having Down syndrome."  So that doesn't mean the baby would have it, just that the risk is higher.

So with that in mind, I didn't have it done. If there was something significant going on that we needed to know, I figured we would know at our anatomy scan around 20 weeks because any physical signs of health issues would be there at that time.

Also, while I think it is totally fine to be curious about these issues and want to know even if one is NOT interested in termination, I am still a worrier just in general. Thinking there is 'x' risk the baby MIGHT have something (not that he does, just that he might) wasn't worth it to me, because I wouldn't be able to enjoy the pregnancy until I knew more about if anything was going on.

  • Well I was and am over 35 and I didn't get the test.  I felt the same as others.

By law they have to tell you about the test if you are over 35, but you aren't required to have it.

  • No, we knew we would love our baby if it was healthy or if it was going to have medical problems.  We were blessed with a healthy baby boy.

  • We did not choose to get the test for the same reasons as the others...high rate of false positives and it wouldn't have changed anything about the pregnancy.  And in retrospect I am really glad I didn't get it now, since it might have shown the abnormalities for the CF gene, and we still wouldn't have been able to have her tested for CF until she was a month old.  I couldn't have imagined what my pregnancy would have been like worrying about that on top of the normal stuff.  Two weeks of worrying about that was far more than enough.
