Tilting the crib/mattress for LO's with reflux?

Hi ladies.....popping in for a quick second to ask a question.   The twins keep me so busy, I never have time to check in anymore.  Hope you are all well....

Our babies don't technically have acid reflux, but are big time spitters.  Luckily they are 'happy spitters'.  But....this is difficult after feeding times, since we have to hold them upright for 20 minutes or so.  Otherwise, as soon as we put them down, it comes right back up.  We've had them sleeping in nap nannies up to this point, but are ready to transition them to cribs.  I've heard of some parents elevating the mattress or tilting one end of the crib to help LO with reflux?  Has anyone done this and how did you do it?  One friend suggested wood blocks under one end of the crib.  Another suggestion was to put 3ring binders under the head of the mattress to elevate it.  Just wondering what worked for you and if it helped w/ LO's reflux.

Thanks!

  • We did this when Hayden was about your LO's age. We used a rolled up towel under the head of the bed. It does need to be eleveated that much, just a small amount. You can also use wood blocks under 2 of the legs of the crib (but that would worry me about them slipping and the crib falling down.) GL! My son was also a "happy spitter" with mild reflux but he spit until we took him off of formula at a year.

  • I was just reading a post about this and they used rolled up blankets.  They slowly took the blankets out to lower the incline over time and their kiddo did fine.  We are going to try something similar when we transition him.  Right now, he spits up a ton even with the RNP incline, so I'm scared to try!
  • Our DD is a major spitter.  We also used towels to elevate her mattress a bit.  Honestly, we didn't think it helped much and we eventually abandoned the elevation.  She also went from a happy spitter to a bit reflux-y so she's now on Zantac; I'm not sure if that's why the towel didn't help much.

  • When we were dealing with Elizabeth's reflux, we got a crib wedge from BRU. And it still comes in handy when E has a cold.

This is similar to the one we got:

ETA: we ended up putting it under the mattress. E's a belly sleeper and we weren't comfortable with her sleeping on the soft wedge itself, plus it moved around when it was just under the sheet. But seemed to work just fine under the mattress instead!

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • Before Brady was diagnosed wtih Pyloric sten they had me put rolled up towels under the mattress for a few days but I do have that wedge the PP mentioned and it works well

  • We had a bad time with AR and we used the wedge under the sheet and also books under one side of the crib.  Because he slid down and would wake up we bought this:

It was a lifesaver for us and he used it until he was like 6 months.  GL!

  • With Ava, we put a few rolled up towels under the mattress (not the sheet) to incline one end.  We did not find it to be useful at all.  With the twins, we've just resigned ourselves to ridiculous amounts of laundry.  ;)
