To Swaddle or Not to Swaddle??

What's your opinion on swaddling, I think I need to practice.  Sounds like it could be a life saver for soothing babies.  What do you think?

Re: To Swaddle or Not to Swaddle??

  • Swaddling was my life saver! I am very pro swaddling! In fact, I am pro the whole happiest baby on the block philosophy.

  • you can try it but it doesn;t always work. DS hated to be swaddled and broke out of it every time.

  • We didn't because DS wouldn''t stand for it.

  • Not all babies like it, like a lot of things, you won't know til the baby comes.

  • Why wouldn't you swaddle when they are newborns? It helps comfort them and make them feel secure. Swaddling helped my DS sleep without us when he was a NB.

  • I was anti swaddling with #1.  It looked like a baby straight jacket and I thought it would be cruel.  After several sleepless nights I tried one we got as a gift and DS slept wonderfully.  Not every baby likes them, but they are certainly worth trying.
  • my son was swaddled until he was like 6 months...haha.

It was the only way he slept. he loooooooooved it.

Pleasae see my response.  He could not stand to be swaddled.  Should I have tortured him with the swaddle?

  • We tried with DD, but she did not like and and squirmed until free.  She hated anything restrictive.  I will try again this this LO.  For those that it works for, I am sure it is great.
  • i 2nd the happiest baby on the block.  it was a good read before having DS.  DS hated to sleep swaddled - but it always did the trick when he was in "the witching hour(s)" in the evenings.

definitely not the be all, end all for all babies...but certainly a good place to try as many babies are comforted by the closeness.

  • If LO doesn't like the swaddle, then try tying her/his arms and legs to each corner of the crib, that way they are in a different position, but still can't move.

  • it is definitely worth the $10 wraps.  I agree that it doesn't work for all babies, but also I think some parents don't give it a shot long enough either, kinda like CIO, everyone has their own limits.  I've had friends say their kid busted out and they never tried to wrap them back up and some say they think it looks uncomfortable for that baby.  To each their own.  I'm not a co-sleeping fan either, but some friends swear by that being their method of choice.

Personally for me, I'll do whatever it takes to get the LO to sleep....swaddle, pacify, fancy "colic" hammock, music, whatever the trick.

I also liked Happiest Baby on the Block, and some parts of Babywise (which I know isn't always well liked on TB).

Ditto the sentiment on the book. By about 3 months DD was done with the swaddle, but by then she was sleeping comfortably consistently. My nephew was swaddled until almost 9 months and still enjoys being tucked in very tightly- for some babies they need that security.

What the fvck? The point isn't to make them unable to move, creepo. It's to make them feel secure.

They've been in your womb for the past 9 mos. where they felt all cozy and secure, swaddling replicates this feeling without them flailing all over the place.  It isn't some type of medieval torture.

  • We swaddled DD until she was about 5 or 6 months, whenever it got hot outside. I highly recommend it and I highly recommend a swaddler, not just a blanket wrapped around them.

Ohhh....I thought we were thinking of ways to create miniature straight-jackets.

BTW, I am TOTALLY KIDDING.  You bizzos need to chill.

Get a Miracle Blanket. Or 5.

  • We used the swaddleme for the first couple of months and when he started breaking out of it (but couldn't sleep well without being swaddled) we used the miracle blanket that a friend of mine loaned me. We used it until 5ish months when he started wriggling out of it but staying asleep anyway. He absolutely hated the process of being swaddled and would scream as if we were ripping off his arm but once he was swaddled, we would pick him up and get him calmed down and then put him to bed. By about 5 or 6 weeks he was waking up only once per night and by 10 weeks he was sleeping from 10pm until 5 or 6 am. I hope that the new baby does as well with it!

This. The Bump needs a sarcastic smilely because apparently not everyone gets obvious jokes... Hmm

Oh, I was just being a sarcastic b**** back :-)

Oh really?  Just kidding were ya?  Then why did you post about me on BGP?  https://24.233.164.204/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=89

    Pretty cvnty of you.

  • My kids outgrew the swaddle me in 2 wks. I was taught by the nurses at my hospital how to swaddle with a large muslin/blanket, and I did. I burrito'd my babies up and they LOVED it. My son always freed one arm, but he liked it nonetheless. My daughter was content to be in it for as long as I'd let her. Swaddling was a sign it was night time, and not being swaddled meant it was day time and we needed to be awake as much as we wanted.

  • We didn't swaddle DD for very long, and we never swaddled her arms in because she would flip out and try to break her arms out of the blanket. I wouldn't say I noticed that it soothed her, we only did it at night to keep her warmer.

All of this!  For DD, I think swaddling was what helped her to sleep through the night (STTN) starting at 1.5 weeks old!  We loved it!  We kept her swaddled until she decided that she was done with it and was breaking out.

We liked the Kiddpotomous (sp???) swaddling blankets, very Dad friendly with velcro!  Smile

ETA - Maybe it was the SwaddleMe brand.  I can't remember, I just remember the packaging!

Was there a specific brand of blanket you used after the SwaddleMe, or did you just use a regular blanket?  DH & I want to try swaddling if our LO will tolerate it, but neither one of us has a clue how to do it (this is our first baby).  And was the swaddling w/a regular blanket an easy process to pick up on?  I can learn stuff like that pretty fast, but DH might have some issues lol.

We used this kind.  They are anywhere...target, BRU, etc. and around $10.  They come in a couple of different fabric types too (fleece, cotton).

Regular blankets work well too, we just liked the ones I linked too.

The youtube video on double swaddling was interesting too, I'd never seen that before. (on a pp)

DD hated all the swaddle blankets and love just a plain old receiving blanket wrapped tightly. There's lots of examples on the web, but you can ask the nurses at the hospital to show you.

  • My son was swaddled in the Miracle Blanket up until about 4 months (when he started being able to break out of it on his own).  It worked WONDERS for us.

That being said, swaddling is not tolerated by all babies.  You'll know when yours arrives.
