rare-ish pregnancy symptom: groin/pubic bone pain. Need your help!

Hi everyone,

I usually post on the December board, but I wanted to see if I could hit more people so I'm contacting all of you now.

Ever since about 15 weeks, I have had pain deep in my groin and pubic bone area. I think it might be a ligament issue like round ligament pain, but the pain isn't at that ligament per se.

If you have a similar issue, I would love to know what you've done to relieve the pain. Or what makes it worse, even, so I can avoid that. I try to stay active, but I know some activities are worse than others. I know this is a long post so you can stop reading here (and comment or not) but I'm providing more info here in case you think this problem might sound familiar.

So far my doctors have been sort of clueless about it, as have my various instructors of yoga/prenatal fitness (they are only sort of clueless, but clueless enough to not be very helpful.) I've come to realize this is a sort of rare symptom.

Here are some more descriptions of the problem so that you understand:

1) putting on pants while standing up is extremely painful. The combination of putting weight on one leg while holding the other one up for more than a split second (walking/marching is ok!) is really bad.

2) The yoga position in which you are on all fours but then you put one leg back behind you and keep it elevated is also extremely painful. (like this: https://www.anmolmehta.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Kundalini-Yoga_poses/basic-yoga-balancing/basic-yoga-balancing-pose-r.jpg)

3) Many leg movements you'd make while lying down (e.g. the ones you'd make to roll over) are painful. It's also quite uncomfortable to lie on my side without something between my legs.

4) Trying to go from a stand-still to a fast walk or sprint causes problems...there is initial pain, and the general pain later on is a lot worse. However, warming up slowly is usually fine.

5) Overall, this problem has caused me to start waddling at that early stage in my pregnancy -- 15 weeks -- well before I was even showing.

Things I can do without a problem: elliptical trainer for an hour at a time (maybe more...didn't try), walking/hiking for over an hour at a time, biking, tap dancing. These things really don't hurt. I do wonder whether they might make the pain worse that night, but I'm having trouble seeing a pattern.

Please comment if it sounds familiar and if you have a solution. I think it's getting worse and I really want to know what I can do to relieve some of the pain.

This is what I have. SPD. It is the pelvic bone. Although mine hurts more to the side than in the middle. But it causes MASS amounts of pain. Look it up and ask about it next time.

Ditto this.  I have the exact same symptoms as you OP.

  • MIne started around 24 weeks and my doc prescribed this which helps a lot. It doesn't cure it but I went from not being able to walk anywhere to being able to run errands for about an hour before being in excruciating pain.

On extremely bad days I have used crutches around the house. It relieves so much pressure that the annoyance of crutches is worth it.

    Good luck

  • I thought I pulled my groin muscle during a nesting moment but it has been two months+ since I injured myself and I hurt everyday/all day.  I asked my doctor at my last appointment if this was normal and she said because this is my 2nd pregnancy that it was very normal and should go away after giving birth.  I can only hope she's right because this groin pain sucks!  I have noticed that if I stretch at night before bed I don't hurt AS much but the pain is still there.  So unfortunately I can't give you any ideas other than what my doctor said, it should go away after LO is here.
  • Mine hasn't been diagnosed as SPD, but I've been experiencing the same kinds of pain that you're talking about for the past 2 1/2-3 months now. It hurts more on my right than the left, and hurts just about anytime I seperate my legs. The most excrutiating pain for me is when I'm in bed and roll from my left side to the right side. I literally sit up completely in bed, and slowly roll to my right. I can even hear/feel the right side of my hip popping out of place. My hips are pretty stiff after getting up from sitting/laying down for long periods of time, but after I get to walk around the stiffness eases up.

So here's what I've read about and have since implemented and it seems to help:

    1) My DH calls it my pillow fortress. In bed I have 1 body pillow that I put between my legs longways so it supports not just my hips, but also all the way down my legs. I have 1 medium sized pillow behind my back, and 1 medium sized one under my belly, and then I just have 1 pillow to support my head/neck. By doing so it seems to have relieved some pressure off my back/hips, and I've been sleeping a lot better too.

    2) Putting on/taking off underwear, pants, skirts, socks, shoes is all done sitting down.

    3) Getting in/out of the car. When you sit down, go in butt first and then swing both legs in a the same time. When you get out, swing both legs out at the same time, and then stand up.

The pain isn't gone entirely, but it's become a more manageable pain and doesn't linger as long as it did before.

    HTH!

  • Wow, you all are so helpful! Esp the first person -- so great to know this has a name and it's not actually the same thing as RLP, which I thought it was before! I'm sorry you all are experiencing the same thing, but I'm SO glad that other people know what I'm talking about. What you've described is the same (I do put on my clothes sitting down now, and I also have strategies for getting in and out of the car.)

That website the first person linked to is helpful because I now understand why it's "rareish" -- just 1 in 35 people get it, but it is a known issue. I did think that one woman in one of my yoga classes had it (I had to move in the middle of my pregnancy, so I've been to several), but then no one else ever had it.

I'm so glad I asked you all about it! I will bring it up with the OB next time. Thanks!!

  • I can relate to EVERYTHING you described. I thought I was just over doing things lately, we've had a lot going on so I've had some very long days. About 3 weeks ago it seemed like it was getting a little worse, now the last 2 I've been in pain quite frequently. I have a Dr's appt on Monday & was going to ask if this is normal then. Lately it seems like nothing really alleviates it, it's almost worse when I get up in the middle of the night. The first few steps after resting are excruciating. I might have to look up the link that was posted.

  • I also vote for SPD. Here is what I wrote up for another Bumpie.

That sounds like my SPD, sadly. Many drs do just chalk it up to normal PG stuff, but it is still ok for you to assert yourself and have your dr look at you, despite what the nurses think. When I went it, the dr did an internal and then felt my pubic area and it was horribly painful, but at least I got some validation. He doesn?t even call mine SPD, he calls it pelvic dislocation, which actually a diagnosis above SPD, but I just simplify.  The dr wasn?t particularly helpful in terms of advice, but at least I felt validated and made sure the problem was what I thought it was and not something else.

He said the two best-feeling things would be to be on all-fours and to sleep in a recliner position. I do both.  I did the recliner position with like 7 pillows then some friends lent me their fancy pillows. So, I put a wedge under my back and the snoogle under my knees (so they stay bent) and around my left side and then under my back to keep me in one place. I also put a second pillow under both my knees and head. I am considering borrowing a recliner from a friend for the days I work from home bacause sitting in a chair gets to be painful even though I alternate between a normal chair and a balance ball chair.

Laying on my side has become impossible in the past week. I didn?t do it before much because it hurt, but now it literally makes me want to scream.

I have heard that seeing a chiropractor can help. Another thing I?ve heard is to squeeze a tennis ball below the knee, at the knee, and above the knee for five seconds at each place as a good way to keep those muscles strong since squatting has become excruciating, but is great labor prep. I can also do modified squats with my knees facing more to the front and with holding onto a support. (We are doing the Bradley Method, which is big on squats.) Walking?with small, slow steps?also is amazing. It causes dull pain, but inactivity causes me sharp pain when I get up. So, I pick the dull pain and the overall health benefit that walking still has.

The Prenatal Cradle Plus V2 belt is helpful, though I do not wear it every day. On desk-work days I skip it because it is uncomfortable to sit in.  Also, our floors at home are wood and springy and gentle on my body?especially when I wear shoes. Oh, that is a big thing I?ve just learned?shoes really help cushion things and keep the pain away for longer. On active days at work when I am on my feet a lot (and on the unyielding floor, which is carpet over concrete slab), the belt makes it MUCH better.

This website is one of the first things I found that was helpful. While this is a lay-person?s site, her tips on keeping legs together when getting in and out of the ca and bed, sitting when putting on pants, etc. are little things that make a big difference: https://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm

  • Thank god you posted this! I am actually new to this forum thing and don't post much... But the last 2 days the pain has been almost unbearable. I was up crying and walking around in the middle of the night because walking is sometimes the only way to get a break from the pain. We actually thought of calling the doctor last night because I just didn't know what else to do. I've mentioned the pain to her before and they just kind of brush it off and say that joints separate.... But its gotten way worse! I can't roll over, I cant climb the stairs, I cant even get my leg lifted high enough to get into bed. I am definitely printing out the article in the second post and taking it with me to my appointment!

Luck to all that are experiencing this!

  • I have had this too, exactly as you described it. I am a HUGE fan of going to the chiropractor; I'm convinced they can fix anything. I went the other day and told him my hips and pelvis feel all out of whack. He adjusted my hips and did a couple other things, and the pain was gone. I walked out of the office with no pain. The past couple days have been wonderful!

  • I have this too and was told there is very little they can do.  I've been dealing with the pain since July and hope it goes away soon after birth.  Rolling over in bed takes quite some time, but I don't use many pillows, since I can't stay on one side for very long and moving all those pillows with me is taxing.  From diagnosis until this week, my pain was manageable and only made me wince at certain times (rolling over, putting on pants, getting in and out of the car).  This week it has quadrupled and I'm having trouble walking.  I have a month (or so) to go and hope that it doesn't continue to get worse.

Good luck.  I hope you find some relief and commend you for staying so active.
