When they decide to do them? Rowan hasn't had too many colds, but now that we get together with friends more often and go out more, he's on his 2nd one in 2 months! He's had about 4 total and each time he's got an ear infection. I'm just waiting for him to get an ear infection this time around, too. It sucks! The colds aren't that bad at all but the ear infections are a biotch. I had ear tubes and my 2 brother has them, too. I have a feeling he'll have to get them, I'm just wondering when they'll finally make that call.
Re: if your kid has ear tubes, come in..
Paige's pedi told me 6 or more infections in a 12 month span are enough to justify ear tubes, especially if they are reacting poorly to treatment.
We just treated #6, and thankfully it went away with only one dose of medicine... so we're in the clear this time. Next time, we're looking at tubes.
This is what ours told us. She said 5-6 within a year, or if there is 1 that lasts 2-3 months. We just had our 3rd within 4 months, so I have a feeling sometime next year it's going to happen. His seem to come with teething for some reason.
Jonah is finishing his 5th of this year, and had this last one not cleared with Augmentin, we would have had a referral to the ENT for tubes.
Nick got ear tubes at about 11 months, after 6 ear infections that were difficult to treat. For us, it was a huge success.
It took a while to clear up the residual infection that was there when the tubes were placed, but the nice thing is that with tubes, infections are treated with anitibiotic drops, so no more oral antibiotics and building up resistance. He did still get a couple of infections with colds, but they were not as painful since the tube helped to relieve pressure, and easy to diagnose because (sorry tmi), with tubes in place, the infection just kind of runs out the ear. gross, but better than building up pressure in his ear.
I'm a big fan, it helped us so much. He actually just lost the tube in his left ear and I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't mean more infections are to come...
This was pretty much us. After 6 infections and the complications of antibiotics (including 2 20-day treatment courses). We decided the benefit was there. Since he's had the tubes in Jan at 10 months old, there was one very minor infection, but otherwise no issues. We'll see how this winter goes :-)
