3rd Trimester

baby weight...should i be concerned?

i had my growth ultrasound last night, and the tech kept saying that the baby was really on the small side. her approx weight was 6lbs5ounces.  i'm just under 38 weeks.  normally, i wouldn't think that this was a big deal, but the tech kept saying over and over again what a small baby we were having.

Re: baby weight...should i be concerned?

  • My first was 6lbs.10oz. when she was born at 39w3d. She was totally healthy, on the smaller side of average but still in the range of a normal sized baby! I wouldn't be concerned, those growth u/s are just estimates anyway :)

  • My MW said that my LO weighs around 6.5 - 7 lbs now, at 38w 3days. She told me everything is right on track... But I totally understand being worried if your OB keeps saying it. Your LO will be fine though!

  • My siblings and I were all about 6lb 6oz when we were born full term-I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I wouldn't be worried too much.  That's still within normal range.  She'll just be a little peanut, that's all.  Plus, I don't think they are extremely accurate.  The kept telling me with DS that he would be big and he wasn't.  He was 7 lbs 9 oz, which is average.  Plus, you have 2 weeks, hopefully.

  • I have been paranoid ever since I was at a non doctor appointment somewhere and the lady said wow, your belly is really small for how far along you are.  When I went into the OB the next day, I asked, is this baby going to be small (DD was 8lb 1oz at birth 40 wks), and she said, "I think so, but its still early..." Mind you, this is the same OB who thought DD was going to be over 9lbs....

Im most paranoid because I feel like I have had more cravings for coffee with this pregnancy than I did with DD, so I feel like I have stunted LO's growth :(

  • You probably don't need to be concerned unless the baby is less than the 10th percentile or kept dropping in growth. Our baby was at the 13th then 12th and is now below the 5th percentile, so they are watching her closely.

  • My doc was telling me the same thing (measuring small, small baby, etc) and finally I just said - is this a concern? She said no, and that as long as the baby is moving around, she's getting plenty of oxygen to aid in further growth and weight gain. Anything in the 6 lb range is perfectly normal. I also hate when they act like having a small baby is  a bad thing - there is a difference between small and TOO small/not growing properly.
  • Most of the babies in my family have been between 6-7lbs.

I just think more often then not we are hearing of the 8-10lbs babies that are being born.

I know I would be perfectly content with a 6-7lbs full term baby!

  • That is absolutely not excessively small. Plus, the estimates are off. My DS was only 6 pounds, 4 ounces at 40 weeks when he was born and was perfectly healthy. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

  • I had a friend who had her baby at 39w5d and she weighed 6 lbs, 10 oz.  Another friend who had her DD 2 weeks early and she was 5 lbs, 14 oz.  Both perfectly healthy, just tiny little peanuts!  :)

  • My first was born at 7 lbs even at 40 weeks and was perfectly healthy. My doctor is saying this baby will be about the same size give or take and he is not concerned at all.

I drink coffee every morning.  Regular coffee.  And sometimes a cup in the afternoon.  My LO is measuring in the 76th percentile.. as long as you're under the recommended daily amount, you have not stunted your child's growth.

  • I  got told at my 32+5 days  scan that LO is 4 6 and that  they  dont expect him to be  much more  then 6.

neither  me or his father  were  big  babies and  my midwife  has taken that  into  consideration and doesnt think there  is anything wrong with that weight. As long as moving 10 times in 12  hours  its normal according t5o her

  • Don't sweat it!!  I know it's easier for me to say that than it is for you to do it.  I have had 3 babies (going on 4th right now) and all were in the 6+ lb. range.  My mom had 6 babies and all of us were in that same range.  Maybe you just won't have BIG babies??  Besides, the u/s tech is not a DR.  Just the person that reads the screen for the DR. and performs the u/s.  If your DR. isn't concerned about the size and weight maybe you could just take a deep breath and try not to worry... Ask your DR. if you are worried.  It may help you sleep at night.  Good Luck!
  • I was 6lbs, 7 oz and I was overdue. Don't worry.

  • My sister in law had a healthy baby when she was 38  weeks who was just over 6. They can be off on the weight. Plus ultra sound techs are not doctors and I have heard them say some strange  things to people.
