Flat Head Update

I took Reese to the pedi on Friday.  He confirmed that her flat spot is "moderate".  Mel, you were right--she has torticollis, which basically means that she has a twisted neck.  He said that it's fairly common after a vaginal birth.  The left shoulder is typically delivered first, and the right side of the neck gets stretched in the process of delivering the right shoulder.  When this happens, the muscle gets pulled, & the body's response is to coil/tighten on that side.  So, that's why she won't look to the left--it's uncomfortable for her.

He gave me some exercises to do to help to loosen & stretch the muscle.  He is going to re-evaluate at her 4 month appt mid November, & if it isn't improving, he is going to send us for PT.  By 5 months, if her flat spot isn't going away, we will have to see a cranial specialist to talk helmets. :*(  So, at this point, we have to do everything we can to keep her off of the right side of her head.  We are forcing more tummy time (which we were already doing quite a bit of), using the bumbo seat, & just slightly propping her up with a rolled up washcloth when she sleeps to help her head fall more naturally to the left side.  We are only holding her in our right arm.  The pedi seemed pretty confident that if we are aggressive with these things, that we will see improvement quickly, and the next steps will not be necessary.  Fingers crossed.

  • Oh no, Dani!!! Ya see??? As a mother, ya just gotta trust your instincts. I so sorry!! I definitely know torticollis is common, and On the bright side, you still have 2 months to correct the problem as best as you can. I'm sure with lots of tummy time and attention, it will be ok. My friend's son has it too - and he is developing into a perfectly normal 10 month old. I'll be thinking about Reese and praying it remedies itself as soon as possible!!

  • Well that's good news and bad news.  I am sure it will round out nicely now that you know how to help it!
  • I'm sure it will round out soon. She looks perfectly gorgeous in her 3 month pic so I'm sure it's not as bad as it seems!
  • Well, even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear, I'm definitely glad you got some answers. Hopefully what you're doing will help correct itself! Either way I know it will work out for you!! **vibes** it corrects on it's own!
  • I am so glad you got some answers, and I was able to help in some small way to guide you through lol....No matter what it will be fixed, so that is great news....Crossing my fingers that all the things you are doing now will reverse it on its own!!!!
  • Have you considered taking her to a chiropractor?  That can help A LOT!  That was my big problem when I was a kid- a crooked spine that prevented my brain from draining fluid.  I was in and out of the hospital for years before finally going to a chiropractor when I was 10 and in 6 months I was cured.  I know they can do adjustments on very young babies so you should look into this, too.  It couldn't hurt!
  • My co-workers daughter has that and is in PT.  She said it is helping a lot!
