I took Reese to the pedi on Friday. He confirmed that her flat spot is "moderate". Mel, you were right--she has torticollis, which basically means that she has a twisted neck. He said that it's fairly common after a vaginal birth. The left shoulder is typically delivered first, and the right side of the neck gets stretched in the process of delivering the right shoulder. When this happens, the muscle gets pulled, & the body's response is to coil/tighten on that side. So, that's why she won't look to the left--it's uncomfortable for her.
He gave me some exercises to do to help to loosen & stretch the muscle. He is going to re-evaluate at her 4 month appt mid November, & if it isn't improving, he is going to send us for PT. By 5 months, if her flat spot isn't going away, we will have to see a cranial specialist to talk helmets.
( So, at this point, we have to do everything we can to keep her off of the right side of her head. We are forcing more tummy time (which we were already doing quite a bit of), using the bumbo seat, & just slightly propping her up with a rolled up washcloth when she sleeps to help her head fall more naturally to the left side. We are only holding her in our right arm. The pedi seemed pretty confident that if we are aggressive with these things, that we will see improvement quickly, and the next steps will not be necessary. Fingers crossed.
