What's the difference between...

What's the difference between a humidifier and a vaporizor?

  • Seriously people!?!?!?!?!  I wanna know!

  • I'm pretty sure the only difference is that the humidifiers give out cool air and moisture when the vaporizer puts out warm air and moisture because I think it boils the water first. They both serve the same purpose, and we've used them both, and never noticed a difference in one over the other. And if I'm not mistaken, vaporizers have to be cleaned out every single time you use them, because they're more likely to grow bacteria?

  • Wow, something that the collective bumpies can't answer! ;)

Maybe a vaporizer is for releasing medicine into the air?

A regular humidifer can do that, too, if you buy one with a medicine cup.

Just FYI, only cool air humidifiers are recommended.

I bought a cool air one for $70.00, it's got a programmable humidity level and all that, but then I saw a vaporizor for $15.00 and considered myself an idiot if it's the same thing.... I know that both grow bacteria and there is a solution you can buy off of Amazon to put in the water to keep the bacteria from growing, aside from cleaning it everyday.  I was just wondering if there were any true differences between the two.

  • Just to confuse you more, we have a waterless vaporizer- made by Vicks. You put little Vicks pads in there and it releases the Vicks stuff all night. Great for stuffy noses!! And it's like $10!

  • I have one of each. I use the cool mist humidifier as an everyday thing, especially during the dry winter months. I use my hot steam vaporizer when I am congested. It has a medicine cup in it and the hot steam releases the menthol into the air.

Both can be huge breeding grounds for bacteria if you don't clean them regularly and change the filters.

  • I dunno! We have an expensive one that MIL gave us for Christmas and I have to say, it is much nicer and has lasted way longer than any of the cheapy ones we have had put together. Also, it doesn't get nearly as dirty/calcified. Oh and if you add a tiny bit of salt to the water, it makes way more steam!!
