Natural Birth

Pitocin and no epi possible?

So I want an intervention free birth.  This not only includes no pain meds or epi, but I did not want to be induced.  Well I may have to be.  I am really scared that since I am not at 40 weeks and obviously she is not ready or I'd be in labor, that the ptocin will fail.  With all of the horror stories about ptocin contractions I'm afraid it will not be manageable without pain meds/epi.  I'm terrified I'm going to end up with a c section.  Her being healthy and ok is all that matters.  I would not be disappointed because I didn't get the birth I wanted.  I am upset because I made my decisions based on what I felt was best for HER.  I couldn't care less about my experience.  I do not feel like an induction and or c section is best, but at this point it obviously is better if I have pre-e.  Sorry for the rant, I'm just scared.

Re: Pitocin and no epi possible?

  • I also wanted an intervention free birth.  It started out that way, but after 15 hours of labor and not enough progress, we decided to let Doc get me started on Pitocin because it was what was best for DS.  The contractions were way more intense and closer together  afterwards, but I was able to deliever my son without any other interviention or drugs. You can do it. Don't be scared whatever happens happens and you'll end up with a beautiful baby girl in the end. It's good that you aren't dead set on no intervention.  Try it without it, but if your LO needs it, get it.

  • I had to be induced twice due to my blood pressure. I went both times with no pain meds. It's super intense, but doable for sure. I only questioned my decision about 2 minutes before both girls were born...but, in the end I was glad I endured.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • I'm sorry. It sounds like your doc isn't trying to push an induction on you, so that's good. You still have some time. Can you look up any natural ways to reduce your BP? I don't know if it will help since it's looking like pre-e, but it can't hurt to try I'd think. Also, if you do set an induction, see if there are any natural induction methods (that are safe) you can try in the days leading up to it.

If you have to be induced and want to go med free, the best advice I can give you is to have them turn the pitocin up as slowly as they can. It will help mimic a more natural labor, and you should be able to handle it better. I had it done that way when my water broke and labor didn't progress, and I was able to make it all the way, getting the epi only minutes before she was born..clearly, I could've gone without had I known I was so close. Good luck.

  • I did not read your other post but I can share my experience of being induced.  They scheduled me for an "induction" with my request for no drugs.  I showed up, they put all the monitors on and broke my water, then DH and I started nipple stimulation and got the contractions going.  We dlievered her 5 hours later.  It would probably make a difference with your dilation and effacement but it might be an option to consider.  We got through without pitocin or an epidural.  FWIW, that birth was easier than my last birth- which did not involve getting induced.
  • You ladies with Pitocin & no epi are ROCKSTARS!  A good friend of mine had to do the same thing.  So to the OP, it's possible- not going to be easy, but definitely possible.  Good luck.

  • Im being induced on Sun because of high BP/ after 40 wks and I am also really concerned about the pitocin and the intensity without epi.  My mom did it, I guess I can too.. but realize that if my bp gets too high and my pain mngt techniques aren't maintaining it at a healthy level, I'd rather give in to the epi than have to have a c/s because of baby stress/ stress on my body.  Just praying our little man makes his entrance before then!!!
  • Thanks ladies! I'm just hoping my BP and proteins don't spike and then we can hold off.  My doc and I are playing it by ear at this point.  I have to go twice a week so I guess I have to take it 3 days at a time for now.

  • I had to have pitocin too, and did ultimately end up with an epidural after 24 hours.  My logic was this: if I can't have a med-free birth, I might as well have the meds that help to make the pitocin pain manageable. I agree, moms who do pitocin without pain relief are my heroes!

I wanted to add on that despite the pit and epi, I had a beautiful, perfect, orgasmic birth where everything else went right.  My MW turned off my epi when I hit 8cm, and I experienced the second half of transition and all of pushing/breathing down naturally.  I birthed my son squatting, had full control of my body, and it was amazing.  I didn't tear.  I did cry.  :)  We delayed cord clamping, and had 45 minutes of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact and bonding.

Just because you have to use meds in one part of your labor, doesn't mean you have to give up your goal of a beautiful birth.  :)  It doesn't have to be all or nothing; like so many things in life, there are a million shades of gray.

  • I was induced with Pitocin and no epi or any other pain meds. It wasn't bad. I labored (intensely) for about 7 hours (had started Pitocin 6 hours previously). I haven't had a birth without Pitocin (since this was my first), so I guess "not knowing any better" was in my favor.

It really, truly was not bad at all.
