Hand-me-down crib or new?

My SIL is going to give us her daughter's crib, dresser, and changing table when they move her to a bed.  The crib is natural wood and is only 2 years old and I like the style.

The other day my husband and I were at the store and he suggested that we buy a new crib, changing table and dresser with part of his Christmas bonus.

Almost every piece of furniture we own is hand-me-down (except our couch which we bought really cheap because the recliner part was broken).  We don't have any credit-card debt and our house is in pretty good shape.  We both have good jobs that are pretty stable even in the event of an economic downturn.  We don't live paycheck to paycheck, but we don't have a ton of savings.

So if you were me, would you buy the new baby furniture?  If we didn't buy it we could save the money for a rainy day, a vaction, or maybe a new kitchen floor.

Re: Hand-me-down crib or new?

  • If you do go with the hand-me-down crib make sure it meets current safety regulations, and get a new mattress for it.

  • Have the hand me down, as long as the furniture is in good shape who would know?  My couches cost $120 for the 2 of them & they've lasted for ages... save your money for something else, especially if you like the style of your SIL crib.

Me, i'm having my crib from my friend who was taking it to a charity shop.  Its worth $600 but i'm paying $40.

  • I think I made myself look really tight with money in my post,  just to explain, for the last 3 years DH was out of work with a bad injury, he's back at work now but I can't get out of my skin-flint ways.

I guess when you spend that long living on one (poor) wage you get that way! :)

  • I have to say, that I am in the EXACT same boat. (Jobs and everything too) It was with the lady across the street though, and the crib and everthing else was only 2 years old. I jumped on the chance and took everything. It looks great in the baby's room, and I loved the style. I've already got compliments on it.

The only thing we did was buy a new matress. She said her's was "brand new", however, I'm OCD and wanted a "new new" one. (Hers was still wrapped). There's nothing wrong with taking it. I felt that we needed to save the money for the upcoming holidays and to keep up with the updates we need for our new home.

Go for it. No one but you will know the difference. Smile

  • First of all, congrats on living well within your means - and not having all sorts of debt.  Being that it is only 2 years old, I would def. take the hand-me-down stuff and save your money for the vacation it seems you clearly deserve.  Maybe a get-away when the baby is 6 mos or so?  That was a good time for us.
  • Thanks for the advice....   I think we will be spending lots of money on baby stuff and it would be nice to save in one area.  I think maybe will buy a new rocking-chair for the room.  I should be able to find one that matches.  We were planning on a new mattress, because SIL is using crib mattress for toddler bed.
  • I would take the crib and all of the other stuff definately.  You could out the money into a saving fund for the child or use it to buy everything else that is going to be needed (which is alot...and if you are like me, clothes and accessories for my DD)
  • It sounds like you like what your SIL is willing to give you.  If it meets all of the current safety regulations, why not save your money for other baby expenses or for a rainy day?

  • I took my cousin's dd crib. Save the money for a rainy day or something you've wanted for a while.
  • As long as it meets safety standards, I would go with the used furniture. You may find you don't use the crib as much as you think, especially when you compare the cost to use.

  • I would take the hand me downs. You will find something else to use the money on that you  need or will enjoy more.
  • Take it! We are using several hand-me-downs. Why not?
  • I would take the hand-me-down...I got a $40 crib from a yard sale (my friend bought it) and a $40 changing table at Goodwill.  They have worked out great with my first.  We bought a new mattress, so we didnt use the old one that had probably started to go bad.

We were living on a budget when we bought those, but we need to buy another crib for the new baby (my son will only be 18 months when the new one comes) and if I can find a crib I like at yard sales or the like, I'll get it there, otherwise I'll buy a new one.
