s.5 year old DS has no interest in letters/numbers

My 3.5 year old tunes me out whenever I try to work on numbers/letters with him.  He changes the subject runs around anything to avoid working on this.  I am beyond frusterated which I know does not help either of us.  I try relating it to his favortie things like dump trucks and construction equipment (lets count the rocks we put in the dump truck or bulldozer starts with b)  No matter what he seems to be "on to me" that I am trying to sneak learning in.

My MIL said dh was the same way.  I on the other hand loved reading and school related things according to my mom.

Should he be writing letters now?  Should he be able to recognize every letter in the alphabet?  He can SOMETIMES write a C the first letter in his name but that is hit or miss and can recognize about 4 letters of the alphabet.  I have also tried rewards like we did with potty training and that has not worked either.  He did just start preschool 2 days a week so I am hoping that might help.  Any insight?  Thanks!

  • Sorry dont know how that post title got screwed up...should read 3.5 year old DS!;)  Looks like mommy needs to work on letters and numbers too!

  • Don't worry about it/don't force it, DS was the same way.  He really just got into writing when he started Kindergarten, he could write his name but not much else (and like yours would avoid the "lessons", forced practicing).  Just a few weeks in to K he picked up the writing and does it really well.

  • We've had plenty of kids start kindergarten not knowing a single letter, sound, or number and still do O.K.  It's still pretty early, so try not to worry or stress b/c that will definitely be passed along to him, as hard as you probably try not to do that!  There are a few ideas in my "Parents Teach" blog (sig) for sneaking in teachy-learny stuff, but research shows that literally the only proven thing parents can do that directly correlates to academic success is read with their kids.  The number of books in your house and number of minutes spent reading with your child matter more than anything else you can do, so as long as you're doing that, I think you're good! =)
  • If you let your 3.5 use a computer, you could try starfall.com. Click the pink ABC link there for letter sounds and other things on each letter. DS loves that site and it was really instrumental in getting him excited about letters.

  • My DD has only started just now.  She is learning them pretty quickly and seems to be enjoying it.  There is a wide range of normal.  I am not worried that she will get to first grade and not know enough to keep up.
  • I'd let it go completely for a while. You can slowly re-introduce in a few months if you want to, but IMO he's still very young. I know quite a bit of 5 year olds who are just now starting their numbers and letters in Kindie for the first time.
  • DD1 is 3.5 and just never had any interest in learning letters and numbers. She has this Barbie handheld game that does some letter/numbers games and she's just starting to do that. It's not for my lack of trying or reading to her, but it's not something I stress about either. She has other interests and that's fine at this age. I too am counting on preschool to help. ;)
