NBR: I have a question if you've smashed your finger...

On Sat DS got his finger smashed while my mom and I were out running errands.  The nail turned purple underneath and the finger did too, and swelled a little.  We stopped at the urgent care center and waited an hr+ but everyone in there was sooo sick and there were still a number of people in line in front of us.  So we left.  The nurse said to look out for more swelling, because he may need to have his nail drilled to relieve the pressure.

Most of the swelling has gone down except on the very tip of his finger around the nail.  He can bend it fine, and uses it some so I don't think it's broken, but I guess I'm still worried about the nail part.  Has anyone experienced this?  How long did you notice swelling for?  Did your nail eventually fall off?  Any other advice (we're on vacation this week, otherwise I'd just take him to our pedi).

  • I know this sounds gross and you will not like the idea of doing it to DS, but you need to stab a small hole in his fingernail.  Use like a sewing needle or something.  It will relieve the pressure of the smash (much like drilling it would) and he is much, much less likely to lose his nail.  Poor baby.  Good luck!

  • It should be fine. The nurse is right bruising under a nail can take longer to heal and be extra tender. When we injured out nails and they started to peel my mom would have us soak in warm epsom salt water and then clip the nail or cut it where it was hanging to avoid it getting ripped off accidentally.

  • I had something like that happen to my toenail.  I had some purple bruising under the nail, but not much and it didn't really hurt. I never drilled a hole and sure enough about a week later the entire nail fell off. Not just where the purple was up to either, the ENTIRE nail.

It wasn't fun. It grew back ingrown, so definitely try to relieve some of that pressure.
