Diaper pail or regular garbage bin?

So I've inherited an old Diaper Genie and after looking online for instructions on how to use it, I've come to the conclusion that it is ANCIENT. I don't even think the refill bags for it are even sold anymore. It doesn't even look like it has any kind of internal smell lock mechanism. Eeek!

I'm considering just getting a kitchen sized garbage bin with a lid and foot pedal instead... and just bag up the diapers individually before throwing them in the garbage (I picked up extra doggy poopy bags for this purpose, but was initially just planning on keeping them in my diaper bag for outings).

Thoughts?? What are you ladies using?

  • A reular bin should be fine

  • We've always just used a regular bin. I LOVE having the foot pedal, and we don't even bag diapers individually. The lid keeps the smell in just fine, and I take the bag out every 2-3 days when it gets full.

  • I assume you'll be using disposable diapers?  I recomend a garbage bin for sure!  We got the diaper Diaper Genie II and used it for the first few weeks, and never again...  it just is soooo much easier to use a trash can!  I just cleaned out the nursery the other day and went to toss the Diaper Genie II and it didn't have any dirty diapers in it or anything, but there were bugs!  I hate the thing!  It just holds onto the moisture too well, I am discussted by them at this point.

    Ewww!! That's horrible!!

And yes, we're using disposable diapers. Anything that gets saturated in pee pee and poopy gets thrown out in this house! haha

  • We have a Diaper Genie but only because we bought it a couple years ago for the dog.  We lived in a townhome and kept the garbage in the garage so we didn't want it smelling like dog poo in the hot VA summers.  It worked really well to contain the smell and we haven't used it in about a year and a half so we washed it really well and moved it into the nursery figuring it will hold baby smell just as well.

  • I am going to try out the diaper genie only because a friend gave me hers that she didn't use, I have a couple refills and if it doesn't work out I'll just return them. Doggy bags are a good idea though, especially for when your out shopping and there's no garbage!

I wouldn't go out and get a new genie I would just buy a small can and use the doggy bags. Once your LO is done with diapers you can still use the can-whereas the genie will be no good :P

  • For DS and for this baby, we are just using a regular garbage can with a foot pedal. I wouldn't use a kitchen sized one, but a smaller sized one since you will end up changing it daily or every day or two and due to the smell, you won't let it get that full. It has worked fine for us.

  • We got the Diaper Champ on the recommendation of a couple of different people.  It is like the Diaper Genie only it holds regular 13 gallon trash bags.

  • When she has a poopy diaper i will bring it out into the garage trash can in an old grocery plastic bag but when it's pee i'll prob just throw it out in the kitchen trash can

This is us too. With DD, we just put them in the kitchen garbage, but every time I open it to put something in, the smell sneaks out and is so gross. This time around, we have the Diaper Champ, and I really like the fact that it holds the regular trash bags, which I think will help cost wise too.

  • We got this SimpleHuman stainless steel step trash can from Target. It'll hold grocery bags and will keep our dog out. And the smell *in* (we have a bigger one downstairs that we love).

  • we bought a diaper geinie for poop diapers and we already have a garbage bin where the lid opens that we will use for pee diapers.  We were going to use it for everything but our dog has been a bit naughty lately and we are worried he is going to get into the garbage bin and we will have to clean up a poop diaper that has been shredded all over the house.

  • We use the diaper champ and it works well.  FYI you are not supposed to throw fecal matter in the trash, please try to scrape off as much as you can and flush, it's a public health hazard to have fecal matter in landfills.

  • We have the Diaper Genie II and I like it...poops get really smelly after you start solids!  It doesn't always contain all of the smells, but I imagine you'll be going through a lot of bags if you bag each poop individually.

  • We got a diaper pail from BRU, but not the diaper genie.  It was about $15, is smaller than a kitchen trash can but takes regular 13 gallon bags, has a foot pedal & and an odor eater disk inside the lid.  I obviously haven't tried it yet, but if it doesn't work, I only wasted $15+.

As for the doggie bags, I hadn't even thought of that!  But I think I might pick some up to keep in the diaper bag for when we travel & trash cans aren't available.

  • We have a Diaper Champ that we used with DS.  It kept in odors well until he started solids.  It just couldn't keep up after that.  We flush poop in the toilet, but what remains on the diapers still stinks up the room.  So, we bag the poopy ones individually and take them right out to the trash.  We just use plastic grocery bags.

  • My best friend told me about the munckin/arm&hammer baggies to dispose dirty diapers. She says that work great. They have a fresh scent to them so she can just throw the bags into a regular trash can until she takes out the trash! Plus they have a dispenser that you can clip on ur diaper bag! This is definately what I will be using when LO gets here! HTH.
  • I personally really like our diaper genie.  We empty it often but it does contain the smell MUCH better than just a kitchen bin with lid.  For us, our "outside trash" is downstairs and across the house so we don't have the option of taking every single poopy diaper outside immediately.

  • It really depends on how often you are going to empty the pail and how fussy you are about smell...

Personally, I was quite happy to get a smell-proof, 'clean', turn-lock-bag diaper pail. It wasn't expensive and I think it will just be more pleasant.

  • a regular bin is fine until you start solids... then the poop stinks!!! Then once you start whole milk (12 months+) forget it... the poop STINKS!!!

Individual bagging will end up costing more than just buying a diaper pail... the diaper champ, and a few others can be used with regular trash bags. I would consider investing... if not now, a few months after LO is born.
