I'm so sick of debating names with DH that I could cry. His newest name choice is Patricia, which was originally only supposed to be our middle name choice. He has two aunts who passed away in the past year named Patricia (one was like a mother to him), and a grandmother with the same name who is in poor health.
I like the sentiment behind it, but I'm not sure I like the name. I just feel like Patricia or "Patty" for a little girl is too old fashioned. Then again, maybe I'm missing something and it will be adorable later on when she's older.
Any name suggestions would be appreciated... we apparently need to have a Irish name because our last name is unmistakably Irish and starts with "Mc". Sadly, our previous choices of Fiona, Evangeline, and Lucy are off the table. Grrrrr!
Re: Is there anything cute about the name Patricia?
You could call her Trish as a nickname?
Sorry your going through this, we are having the same sort issue..our last name is very Irish also. DH keeps picking out names that are "too Irish" for me....I mean, I'm not Irish so why would me son need a fully Irish name?
I know someone who goes by Patty and I think it is so cute!! I think it's adorable for a little girl as well. It's sort of whimsical to me for some reason.
Pat on the other hand is not. All I think about when I hear Pat is that SNL character from awhile back.
I feel your pain! We are team green, and I think the boy name we picked out was the easiest part of this process. BTW, if we have a boy he will be Liam Patrick.
He's not even being reasonable. His other choices are Siobhan and Emir. No, and NO!
Molly is taken by his cousin's daughter, and most of the other Irish names for women sound too dated for me. I am really hoping I don't go into labor early!
I just searched some names and here are a few I think are very pretty..
Alaina, Delaney...
Wait Fiona and Fionna came up on my list of Irish names!!!

Thank you, I'll have to take a look at this when I get back from a meeting I'm going to. I think I'm just at a breaking point with all of this. There's so much responsibility in naming a child, and it's frustrating to have completely different taste in names with my husband.
Keep the suggestions coming... I'll be back later!
Oooh I like Marella...very pretty!
Norah, Quinn, Reagan, Riley, Riona ??
My DH liked Liam, but I have a bad name association with that one so it was shot down. He is stuck on Keegan right now, which is okay but I really have a couple of other non-Irish names I prefer.
We did actually agree on Quinn, but for a girl. I'm not sure If I feel it as a boy name. I love it as a female name though!

I have a very good friend named Meagyn (said MAY-gen); although we've always pronounced it Megan. And yes, she's very Irish... red hair, loud, funny, drinks...
I like Patricia - to me it sounds classy and feminine, and since it also carries sentimental value in your family it makes it special.
I don't like the idea of typical nicknames that much (sorry - like Trish, Trisha and Pat, Patty) and would prefer a more unique endearment reflected in a nickname. So if you feel Patricia might be too old-fashioned, maybe a unique nickname could offer that touch of cuteness that you connect with a little girl. After age 5-7 the cuteness factor of a first name may be undesirable anyway. So maybe a traditional name gives you the chance to experiment with nicknames or middle names more, whereas a more unique first name plus a nickname can quickly sound too important and annoying.
I really, really do love Evangeline, though, would hate to give that up! Maybe keep that as a middle name and even derive a nickname from that?
I know, I keep rambling on about nicknames, but DH and I are having a hard time agreeing on a name. He's so worried that a name may wear out too quickly if it is not traditional, so the middle or nickname is the loophole to make it different without being too experimental.
My friend is a Patricia and only goes by Tricia. She is Tricia McLau_ _ _ _ _
Can't get any more irish than that!!
What about Aislinn (ashlynn) ? A friend of mine Siobhan just named her DD that.
I think Patricia could be really pretty and classic. I also like sandylou's suggestion of Alaina and Delaney. Still, if you love Fiona, maybe you should stick with that. It's a really beautiful name, and I don't think being called Princess Fiona is so bad.
I had two friends growing up named Patricia, actually. (And I'm close to your age, I'm 25.) So while I get that you reference is older ladies, mine is two twenty somethings, if that helps you at all. The first was my childhood best friend. As a kid no one called her Patty, just Patricia. She's actually the opposite of her name...lol. She was a girly girl until HS-when she got a sort of rock chick type haircut, worked on cars , and all her friends were guys. She became an actress in HS as well and still dos it-her most recent project was some modeling and being in the latest production in town of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Her 'real job' is industrial design-she makes all kinds of products that end up for sale to the public. So she is pretty unique/different to say the least! lol.
The other HS friend only goes by Tricia, which I think is cute and totally works for a little girl or adult (at least, I've known Tricia 's that were either). She ended up with a Masters in Biology at a great university and was a grad assistant teaching college students.
Basically, I'm sharing all this because your sweet baby will her (or his ) own person, and WHATEVER you both decide one will fit him or her perfectly, no matter what. I'll try to look up some new Irish suggestions. for girls.
Other thoughts-
Erin
Caitlin
Maura (Mar-ah)
Moira (Moy-rah)
Shea- (shay) I love this one, as I know the sweetest girl named Shea.
Ciara (KEER-a, KEE-ar-a)
haha, me too. I think Tricia is cute though!
If it does not grow on you, I would keep looking. You need to find a name that you both love!
I have 2 girlfriends named Patricia that goes by Patty that are our age... but I like the pp's suggestion of Trish, also cute.
I agree though, it's a little old-fashioned for my taste... it just reminds me mostly of my great aunt Pat... I know that's not helping.
Whew! Thanks for all of the feedback, ladies!
DH has said a big "NO" to Fiona after what happened with the kids and the Shrek reference, and while he likes Evangeline and Lucy he doesn't like them for our baby anymore. Ok?
I suggested Maura a while ago... no, "sounds too much like Laura" (SIL). Caitlyn is out because that's my stepdaughter, and all forms of names that can be turned into "Kate" or "Cait" won't work. Maegen is a family name, but there are already three of them.
I'm going to take a look through the links you all gave me and consider your suggestions. Unfortunately I just don't think I'm going to be able to love the name Patricia in the same why I loved the name Fiona, and I need to find a name that is special for more than just sentimental reasons. We can definitely use it as a middle name, but Msixela is right, I should be able to veto any name that I don't care for.
Sigh... I just want to have this done!
My mom's name is Patricia, so I like it. lol Everyone calls her Trish. I think that it's not too old fashioned, especially when she's in the workplace later on in life.
Good luck with your naming debate... What about something like Colleen or Noreen if you want to go Irish...?
