how do i tell if DS is eating?

he is wanting to constantly be attached to my breast.  i can't tell if he is just cluster feeding or wants to suck. and i simply cannot be a pacifier all night!  how do i tell if he's actually eating?

    check if he is swallowing. Usually you can hear him breathing different, like pausing to swallow. People say you can see movement at the earlobes or something when they swallow,but I can't see it, myself.

    Also usually when he's eating my son: sucks *pause pause* suck *pause pause* but when he is just sucking like a pacifier its a bunch of really light sucks all close together.

    just a pp said, you can tell by the sucking pattern.  When they pacify it is usually  sucks really close together with long pauses in between.  When I notice that he is pacifying I just pull him off and give him the pacifier.

    Like the pp said, is he swallowing?  That is always a hint for me.  Also, sometimes ds has milk on the side of his mouth.  I can tell when he is pacifying when his tongue quivers real fast and he starts to close his eyes when he does it.

    yeah... he will latch on...swallow once or twice and then spend 10-15 minutes with the short, weak sucks and then fall asleep.  thanks ladies, i'll be trying the paci next time!
