oh no no no are those the scary devices that stretch you out so you don;t need an episiotomy? Those are not necessary and you shouldn't be putting things inside you, you just risk the introduction of infection!!

I think it is technically supposed to stretch out the perineum. I saw it in the back of a magazine once. It looked scary!

But seriously, why the fvck would anyone do this? Women have been having babies since the beginning of time, and like .00000001% of them used this torturous vagina stretcher. It's not necessary. Your body knows what its doing.

I seriously doubt your OB would be okay with you using one of those during labor. And FWIW, episiotomies are no longer routinely done by most practitioners since studies have shown that natural tears heal better and faster than incisions.

Yes, this is true...I work in an operating room and have had patients that needed them surgically removed because they got stuck....

I would not use it! I had an episiotomy and it hurt bad, I hear it hurts just as much to tear but it's better in the long run. I am worried my episiotomy cut might re-open when I have DD, but I would never use an epi-no!!

OMG.... I too had never heard of this! That is one of the worst inventions I have seen in a long time! And, like someone else said, most doctors don't even do episiotomies anymore. Maybe you should talk to yours about this. There is no way your OB would be ok with this "device."

actually my doc was fine with it. and it is popular overseas. (where the stupid FDA does not rein- EU, JP, Canadian standards are all higher than US standards, BTW)

its is not for use during labor; it is to train you to be able to push bigger and bigger objects out (focusing on the perineum) It doesn't ruin you. It actually makes you stronger.

someone I know was sewn up too tight afterwards...my hubby can barely fit as it is. don't want to complicate things.

Wow, so many women here taking the time to be rude and judgemental! I was just reading an Australian website about pregnancy and found a link about how to prevent perineal tearing. The epi-no is mentioned and yes it is a balloon that is inserted vaginally and used on a somewhat regular basis starting at 34 weeks pregnant. You think this is "yikes!!"? Well just wait until a baby comes marching out of your vag on the big day. THAT is yikes. Why shouldn't a woman look into options for herself? It's not going to introduce bacteria into your system any more than all the other stuff that gets shoved up there. (penis, your or your partners fingers, tongues (hello oral sex), tampons, lubricant, sex toys, doctor's fingers during pap smear, medical instruments) Just do a google search for "things that go into vaginas" and see what women put up there. And stop being so rude ladies!

Actually alot of OBs are ok with people using these. And my doula had a client that use one a few times a week in the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy and she didn't tear at all.
