Anyone deliver at Newton Wellesley, Brigham or Beth Israel?

I'm trying to choose a hospital to deliver and wanted to know if you had a good or bad experience at Newton Wellesly, Brighham and Womans or Beth Israel.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone deliver at Newton Wellesley, Brigham or Beth Israel?

  • Haven't delivered myself but a close friend went to NWH and loved it. I have heard a lot of nice things about BI though not from anyone I know personally. I did a clinical rotation at the Brigham and they have some really nice nurses and also a lovely postpartum unit. I think anyway you choose you will be in good hands. :)  Good luck.

  • I think any one of those would be a great choice.  I guess I would choose the hospital that your OB is affiliated with or the one that is most convenient to where you live.  I chose NWH as it's easiest for me to get to.  And I've had friends rave about all 3!

  • I delivered my son at NWH one year ago.   It was a wonderful experience; the nursing staff are absolutely incredible.  Funny enough, my husband is first generation Irish and the entire dr and nursing staff were from Ireland.   Great Irish personalities to help take you mind off the "matter at hand".  Location and OB affiliation helped with the decision.   If I am blessed with a second child, NWH will be my choice again.
  • I delivered at NWH 4 weeks and absolutely loved the nurses in labor and delivery. They were both very attentive to me, but also to my husband - they pretty much spend their whole shift with you making sure you are taken good care of. The maternity ward nurses were good too, but only stop in periodically to take vitals for you and baby.
  • I've worked at BI for 14 years in the NICU and newborn nurseries. Several friends of mine have delivered there. Amazing staff, amazing care.  If you have a low risk pregnancy, I've also heard good things about NWH.  My friend delivered last night at BWH and was very happy. You can't go wrong. :)
  • Our first isn't due til Feb, but we'll deliver at NWH b/c of OB affiliation, and it warms my heart to hear that it's such a great place. Thanks!
  • I had my baby at BI in July, and I really liked it there.  The nursing staff in the maternity ward were really nice and took good care of me.  My baby had to be in the NICU for a few weeks, and everyone in the NICU is also fantastic.  I would highly recommend BI.
  • I delivered in May at Brigham and Women's and had a great experience.  The nurses were wonderful!  If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask me.
  • I had one of mine at NWH and I had a great experience.  It was a C-Section so I cannot comment on the L&D aspect but the maternity nurses were great.  They knew I had 2 more at home so they let me sleep as much as possible.  They did come in to check on me through out the day and not just for my vitals so I guess it just depends on the nurses.

I personally  wouldn't choose B&W because it's a teaching hospital.  I personally feel more comfortable knowing that my doctors will be the ones to deliver my baby and not a resident.  But again that is just me.  It doesn't bother some people.

  • I'm a few days away from delivering at NWH and so far, I can only rave about my experience. I'm an older momma and required some extra monitoring.  Both the Maternal Fetal Medicine department and the Antenatal branch of L&D have been amazing. Everyone has been both professional and very supportive.

Countless friends, including one who is a physician, delivered here and all had good experiences.

Also, they have a partnership with the Brigham.  You can arrange a tour of L&D which will give you a better feel for the environment they create.

     Good luck!

  • I had a great experience at NWH. It's all private rooms, nurses and LC are fantastic, even the food's not so bad for hospital food! I had a c-section and was there 4 nights.
  • I'll be delivering at the Brigham in April, 2011.  So far my experiences with the docs and nurses have been great.  Good luck!

  • Thanks you guys all these responses are fantastic. I'm in the process of choosing an OBGYN and would like to deliver in one of these hospitals. Can anyone recommend an OB they really liked? Male or female doesn't matter for me, I just want what's best for my first pregnancy. Thank you!
  • I go to New England OBGYN and will be delivering at Brigham.  I specifically see Dr. Kolbas, but I have seen the others during rotating appts and I'm be happy with any of them.

  • I delivered DD at NW and will deliver DD2 there as well in a few weeks.  However, I was not impressed with their nursing staff at all.  I felt that they were very old school and not very progressive.  I also contracted MRSA from my stay there as well.

If I didn't LOVE my dr, I would definiatly go to the Brigham.  If your baby is born really sick, he/she will be sent to the Brigham from NW.  Also, because the Brigham is a teaching hospital, not only is the physician focusing on you as a patient, but he/she is also going to be extra thorough because they are training a newer dr.

Good luck with your decision, you really can't go wrong either way.

    According to the NW website...

"Newton-Wellesley Hospital has a technologically sophisticated Special Care (level 2) Nursery with experienced, highly trained staff and 24 hour coverage by a board-certified neonatologist. These neonatologists also work at Brigham and Women's Hospital for a month or more during the year so their levels of experience are comparable in both institutions.

?Our nursery is not a NICU (level) because it is not licensed for long-term ventilation services. We can, however, provide short-term ventilation for 24 to 36 hours to allow for the baby to show improvement and stabilization in that period of time. If an infant requires care beyond the licensed scope of our Special Care Nursery, we work with our collaborative Partners hospitals to place the infant in the appropriate level of care at one of those facilities, such as Brigham and Women's Hospital. Whenever possible, placement is made for mother and baby PRIOR to birth, such as extreme prematurity, so we can ensure continuity of care.?

  • I had a super experience at The Brigham; I had a planned c-section.
  • I delivered at NW and loved them!! All the nurses were wonderful and my husband and I ended up sending gift baskets to them after we got home because the experience was so great!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend then or return to them if I had a second.
