I need your opinion.....

I was just offered a job in Bend.  I was under the impression that there would be one more interview in Bend before a decision was made but I just got a phone call saying that they are offering me the job and they want me to start on November 1st!

Two things:  First, I don't see how there is any way that I can accept the position without first traveling to Bend, meeting the team in person and seeing where I will actually be working.  Second, there is NO way that I could pack up my house, my baby and my husband and be out there in two weeks to start work!!!

I am a recruiter and I feel pretty certain that these things are not crazy to ask for but my head is spinning right now so I just wanted a consensus from you ladies.  Do you think it is reasonable for me to ask that they bring me out for an on site visit prior to accepting the offer?   Also, what do you think is an appropriate amount of time to ask for in order to relocate and start my new job?  I am thinking AT LEAST a month if not two.  We would need to figure out what to do with this house, find a new place, my husband needs to give notice etc...

Thanks for the advice ladies.  I am totally caught off guard....

  • I don't think what you're asking is out of the question at all. How can this company expect you to completely move your family within 2 weeks, especially if you haven't traveled there to meet everyone. Wow! You must have really impressed them =)

I would call them and let them know that you are really considering their offer but that you would need more time to make the necessary arrangements to move down there. How can you find a place to live in 2 weeks?! That's just crazy. They should understand this and if they don't, then don't accept the job.

And I think 1-2 months is reasonable. Perhaps December 1st as there are still 2 weeks left in October. That gives you a month and a half to prepare.

GL and let us know how everything turns out.

  • First, congrats!  Very cool.  Second, it is definitely NOT out of line to ask for an in-person interview and an extension to move there.  If anything, it shows you are serious about the job and want to do it right.  Maybe you can interview this week and they can give you an additional two weeks?  That would be a good compromise.  You have a lot on your plate right now.  Do what is right for you and your family.  Third...we will miss you terribly!!!
  • A friend of mine just relocated to Bend from Portland.  She started 4 weeks after she accepted.  She is single and was renting a room, so it was very easy for her to "up and move".

I don't think any job will give you 2 full months, that's a long time.  I would ask for 4-6 weeks, if it were me.

    Congrats on the offer!

  • Wow that is exciting! I have heard fantastic things about Bend! We will miss you lots if you do go. Anyway, my opinion is I would definitely talk to them about coming out to meet them in person. I would even request to do that as soon as this week. And then also let them know there is no way 2 weeks is enough time. I think 4 is reasonable and if they want you as bad as it sounds like they do then they will give you the extra time. :) Good luck!!
  • My employer recently hired someone out of Florida, and even though we needed them to start asap, they gave them about 1-1.5 mo to move out. I honestly don't know whether they did an in-person interview. I doubt it. I was hired in-town and only did a telephone interview. My supervisor prefers to hire that way because he feels like it reduces potential bias.

Expecting someone to move and start work in two weeks is rather extreme, I think. I'm curious about how their HR works, because every place where I have hired someone, it has taken two weeks just to get them officially hired and ready to start.

  • Thanks ladies!  I called them today and I will be making a site visit next Friday.  Also, they agreed to give me until at least December 6th to relocate if I do decide to accept their offer.

Thanks so much for all of your advice and encouragement!   P.S.  If you are my friend on FB keep this on the down low.  DH doesn't want his job to know that we might be moving until it is a sure thing.
