2nd Trimester

2nd round of genetic testing...

I had the quad screen done and it came back normal. My OB did say that due to my age (35) and previous complications with my prior two pregnancies that she wanted more genetic testing done this time around. Ummm, ok. But she never really elaborated on top of that.

For background info, with my son, in 2001 I had pre-term labor at 32 and 35 weeks. At 37 weeks I was given the ok for induction but he wouldn't come since he was transverse. So after being listed failure to progress, he was delivered by c-section. My cervix would not dilate since it was scarred from cancer. I was told after his birth that I would always need c-sections since my body does not cooperate.

With my daugher, last December I went into labor at 36w2d from bleeding. We tried mag sulfate and breathene to stop the labor and also had to have antibiotics for Group B Strep. Once the meds were stopped, Emma was coming at 0 station and my cervix was 100% effaced. I was shocked, I was told that would never happen given the scarring. I got my epidural and immediately was put on oxygen for being tachycardic. My OB did not want to risk my uterus rupturing and delivered Emma by c-section.

I have had 2 subchorionic hemorrhages at 7 and 11 weeks with this baby. Due to family issues, I've had severe emotional stress over the last two weeks, have had cramping but no bleeding.

Can anyone tell me what the second round of bloodwork is for? I know my OB wants a more detailed idea of what's going on with me or possibly the baby. I know this is all a precaution as she hasn't lead me to believe that something is wrong right now. I know 6 vials were drawn and the lab tech wouldn't say much. She did say one was for glucose testing ( I had GD with my daughter) but no answer on what diseases or imperfections they were checking for.

Have any of you had two rounds of bloodwork done for your pregnancies? With my son and daughter I had 1 round of bloodwork for each.

Re: 2nd round of genetic testing...

  • With both of my pregnancies (at 35 and 37 y.o.) I had two rounds of bloodwork - 1 in the 1st tri and 1 in the 2nd tri.  They combine the results of both tests to provide a more accurate risk assessment for genetic issues.  This is called an integrated screen.  Maybe this is what your dr. is doing?  I'm sure you could call to ask to find out for sure.

  • i have always had two rounds of blood work for my screening.  One with the NTScan and one at 18 weeks.  They took all of the factors (NT SCAN, and both rounds of blood)  and gave me my risk percentage which was negative. I didnt get any info back intil around 20 weeks.  How many rounds of blood work have you had already?

This is my second round. With my son and daughter I remember having 1 set of blood work done around 14-16 weeks for down's syndrome and such. This time I had the testing done at 11 weeks for the quad screen and when I went last week for my appt she said everything was fine. Then wanted more blood work before I left. It could be something my OB does for moms 35+, just not sure. I'm going to call and see if they have my results or if they can tell me what the testing was for.

I have always had two blood works done....and I am 30.  If they said everything came back fine, I wouldn't worry I would just assume that you are getting the regular bloodwork.

  • If your first round of testing was done in the first tri, then they'll probably get a revised risk with testing in the second tri, which is much more accurate (I just went through all of this and did a ton of research). Even if you don't come back at increased risk for a genetic defect, certain hormone levels can signify potential complications later in pregnancy. I ended up having an amnio done which was thankfully all clear, though I'm still being monitored for other possible complications based on my bloodwork, such as intrauterine growth restriction and preeclampsia.
