Extremely flammable... lunch meat question

I know I am taking a risk by posting about this, but I really am curious.

This is baby #2 for me, and I was strict about not eating any lunch meat during my first pregnancy since it's on my list of "no" items from my doctor. I envied everyone on the bump boards for defying the "advice" and eating cold sandwiches etc.

Now, I am 17 weeks along with my 2nd baby, and crave lunch meat all the time. I've had a few cold sandwiches - and enjoyed every bite (although a bit guiltily). So far, so good.

But, I am wondering this... how many of you actually eat (cold) lunch meat regularly? Has anyone ever actually known someone who has gotten listeria while pregnant from eating lunch meat? How much of this medical advice is a bunch of hoo-ha?

 Let the flames begin!

I'm not flaming you but it's not really defying orders if you weren't given those orders. My OB says lunchmeat it fine.

I haven't heated up or gotten any of my sandwiches toasted simply because I'm pregnant and haven't gotten sick once.

  • My OB said it was on the list of "No" foods for me, too. I've only had it once but it was soooo gooood. I'm sure if you're not eating it every single day for every meal you should be fine. There are a lot worse things you could be putting in your body than lunch meat.

  • I was planning on avoiding lunch meats from what I've read and heard (and there has been listeria outbreaks from meats in my area within the past few years). My doc said not to worry, and as long its not an everyday thing, simply because that much lunch meats isn't good for ANYONE to eat due to the salt and fat contents.

However, LO has another thing in mind and I CRAVE assorted subs like there is no tomorrow. I have had about 4 of them so far, and I must admit that the subs taste amazing to me.

So I say go ahead, just make sure it's not everyday. Occasional eating won't increase your Listeria risk that much :)

  • In the 1st trimester I didn't have any at all, but by the time I hit the 2nd I started eating turkey again. My doctor has not said anything about it being bad and realistically the chances of getting listeria are really very slim. I wouldn't suggest eating it everyday, but every once and a while you should not feel guilty about. I usually get mine at the sandwhich place next to my work called 'which which', where all the sandwiches go through the oven/toaster with the meat on it so it is being reheated technically but i'm not sure if its to the point of boiling like it is suggested by some.

Oh wait...that's for vampires, not lunch meat, right?

I eat it when I want it. It's only been a few times, and I make sure to go to a reputable deli.

  • I eat lunch meat about as often as I did pre pg, so not very often.

  • W/ DD I ate it but always heated it. W/ #2 I've been a little daring and had a cold sandwich here and there.

  • i eat subs from reputable places quite often

i even ate a bologna and cheese sandwich... i couldnt help it i want those so much right now......

i just buy them from palces i worry about like gas stations... Personally they make me nervous but to each their own.

  • Like PP's, my doc also said it was fine. I eat lunch meat probably an average of twice a week.  I get my meat from a reputable deli, and eat subway sandwiches or sandwiches from restaraunts like Panera.  No big deal.
  • "Guiltily"?

    Anyways.....

Yes, I eat it on a regular basis, and no I've never heard of anyone getting sick from eating it.

  • My doctor said that I have a better chance of getting hit by a bus than getting listeria from a sandwich... (and we do not have public transportation in our town). I consider myself pretty safe to each lunch meat.

  • I ate lunch meat throughout my first pregnancy, as well as this one.  As in, more than a couple times a week.

  • I haven't really wanted lunch meat, so it hasn't been an issue.  I might eat it from a reputable place.  I do know that there was a decent-sized deli meat recall a few months ago due to Listeria contamination, so it's not unheard of.

  • I've eaten it plenty and sushi too...but my doctor said as long as it's a reputable place and I haven't gotten sick before no biggie.  All is well with my LO.

This. I eat it, but there are so many dirty corner delis around here in Philly. I just make sure I get my meat from somewhere reputable and busy so that I know the lunch meat doesn't sit around on their shelves for too long.

  • All the time.  It's a much healthier option than a lot of the stuff pregnant women eat.

    Yep - it's a word.

  • I ate it all the time in my first trimester. When I wasn't feeling well it was often all I could stomach for some reason.  I haven't eaten it in awhile only because I haven't felt like it.

I love it. Totally a grammar nazi myself, so I understand. Stick out tongue It's not a frequently used word.

(also, I read this post after my post just above...)

  • I was told that if you're worried about listeria then you can nuke your deli meats in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and then put it in the fridge and still be able to enjoy it cold later.

I've never actually done this because I really don't think there is any need to worry about it unless there is an outbreak of Listeria in your area/the area your meat comes from. Especially the pre-packaged, processed lunch meat like bologna.

I've never known anyone who was pregnant that got listeria but I've also never known anyone that WASN'T pregnant who got listeria either...

I understand the concern though even though this is your second pregnancy (mine too) because they come up with new things that are safe or aren't safe for us to do all the time. I actually had to google from my phone, it in a moment of temporary insanity and panic at the supermarket when I noticed the bottles/jars of honey I was looking at all said they were unpasteurized and I'm like OMG WHAT IF I CAN'T HAVE HONEY ANYMORE?! because there is the concern with unpasteurized dairy products and cheeses but nothing was ever said about honey! I honestly don't think anything was mentioned to me at all with my first pregnancy (5 years ago) that deli meats were a no-no, so I figured "what if" this was another one of those things I didn't know was bad, ya know?

Honey is actually perfectly safe but my point is that you never know and it doesn't really hurt to ask or be a little more careful about something if you're concerned.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.

  • I have it probably 2x a week. I don't know anyone who's gotten listeria at all let alone while pregnant. I try to only get it from reputable places.

  • I worry about getting listeria from eating lunch meat as much as I worry about getting the swine flu from going out in public, which is not at all. If it makes you feel better, you can always heat your lunch meat up, melt some cheese on top while you're at it, and have a nice hot sandwich!

I'm confused. You don't, but you do know people who have gotten listeria from lunch meat?

  • When I made my first OB appt for this baby they said "drink lots of water and avoid lunch meat". Later they told me to warm up any lunch meat and that prepackaged was better. I am not a huge of of the meat anyway, so I have avoided it.

  • I haven't eaten any deli meat since my OB advised me to avoid it.

Listeria outbreaks have happend in my area often enough that I'm not prepared to risk it. It isn't about the frequency of eating it it is about having some that has listeria which could be a one-time situation.

Heating lunch meat does not appeal to me.

I cannot wait for my post-pregnancy cold cut trio from Subway!!
