Toddlers: 24 Months+

I think he's going to college in diapers...

DS is refusing to even sit (or discuss) on the potty. I've decided not to push so we basically haven't started potty training and he's 2.5. He doesn't tell me when he's gone or about to go, he refuses to go on the potty (even at daycare where all the other kids sit on potty). I'm planning to just put him in underwear at 3 and see what happens. However if he has loads of accdients d.c. wont let me send him there w/ underwear (they'll want pull ups) and that will ruin all our efforts. I'm just totally clueless with this. Any advise?

  • He may not be ready.  Keep trying every few weeks or months, and if it doesn't work then back off.  It seems to be the only advice that works so far.  If it's any consolation, my daughter finally started almost 2 weeks ago - prior to this she's been fighting it all the way.  She's 3 yrs 4 months.

  • He's not even 2.5. It's very normal for kids to not be PT at that age, especially a boy. Don't sweat it. DD is not PTed either...just not ready yet.

  • Lilah just isn't ready yet, either.  She is very verbal and loves to do things "by herself" but just won't even consider the potty.  I will revisit it next month, but I'm not pushing it.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • My MIL says her 2 boys weren't potty trained till 3. Give it some time

  • Bribery...my DS wasn't very interested and I told him that he if peed or pooped on the potty that he would get a matchbox car.  I tried stickers and he wasn't interested.  Anyway, it is working.  He is now going several times a day on the potty - only pee, but we're making progress.  He also gets a marble (incentive program) at school every time he goes on the potty and does a good deed.  At the end of the week, with so many marbles they get to buy a toy at the school store (dollar store type toys).  He loves getting marbles.  So, you may want to try some sort of incentive program.
  • DD is almost 3, and we're on our second attempt at potty training.  She was ready, but we've had a lot of issues with her holding it FOREVER (like 5-6 hours at a time) and only peeing when she was in a diaper for nap and bed.  SOOOO, we are now doing a motified potty training, where she is in underwear and then gets a pullup when she tells us she needs to pee, and then she can have the pullup ONLY if she sits on the potty.  So far day two is going really well.  But anyway, point being, give him some time.  You'll be surprised at how much 6 months matures them at this age.
  • He's NOT ready.  Wait till after the holidays and give it a try.  DON'T sweat it and make a big deal of it, think of his feelings.  He WILL be PT but maybe not when you'd like him to be.  DS1 wasn't fully pt until this summer, when he was 3.5.  He JUST wasn't ready before this and my pedi fully supported his not being ready and was adament with me about not pushing him.

  • He's only 2 and a half.  Don't sweat it.  Keep your ears and eyes open for signs that he's ready then go for it.
