I don't know where to begin so I'm going to babble. E has eczema and is wheezy (not currently, but when he gets a cold) and will most likely be an allergy baby. Lately, my supply had dropped by at least 1/3, and seems to correlate with when he started solids. He's fine on the weekends and seems to be satisfied, but I send him to daycare with 4 5oz bottles, and I'm not pumping more than 10oz a day... I also got my period back today (which helps explain my face breaking out and my bloated self...). Also, e cut his first tooth and is biting - he's drawn blood from both of my poor nipples... And it's hard for me to relax when bf bc I'm dreading him biting, which delays my letdown, which frustrates him and probably leads to more biting. I'm really considering supplementing soon (which I feel REALLy guilty about bc Jenna was EBF until she started whole milk) and I'm worried bc of the potential allergies... UGH - I'm just frustrated! And sorry for the formatting - posting from my iPhone while pumping....
Re: BF moms - I need a pep talk!
Honey, you've done great!! There is no harm in supplementing and formula is NOT the devil. And OUCH, your poor nips!! I do not miss that stage at all. Hang in there sweetie! You're doing great!
oh girl I can completely relate. See my post!!! I have allergies and was concerned Lydia would get them too. She's only had one slight cold so far. She's at an in home sitter so I'm sure that's helped with catching something. I had to start supplementing b/c my supply isn't even as good as yours unfortunately.
You're doing awesome.
And Lydia bites too, she's drawn blood on my nipples as well. That has been part of the prob for us too.
You're an awesome mom!!!
You have done an awesome job! Eli has always had an aggressive latch and my LC said that me just dreading this latch was enough to signal my body to produce less milk. Are you feeding him solids after you nurse him? If not, definitely do so b/c your milk is his primary source of nourishment/sustenance and solids is secondary. He is your second and I'm sure you already know that, so maybe he is just that interested in eating solids. Do whatever you feel comfortable doing regarding supplementing. Evan will be happy as long as he is fed.
Eli has a bit of eczema too and we just deal with it. I haven't noticed it correlating with anything he's eating, but of course he got it from me. My breakouts are only due to dry skin and I noticed his is drier than it was before. He is on Enfamil A.R. formula and doing well with it. We've been on it for a week now and he has handled it better than the others we have tried.
Good luck with whatever you decide!
ETA: Enfamil instead of Enfamily lol
You are doing a great job Lisa! I know it's a frustrating time. If you decide to supplement, don't feel guilty. If you stress yourself out about it too much, things will only get worse for breastfeeding and for you emotionally. Evan is a precious healthy boy!!!
You are doing a great job.
Avery didn't bite me too many times but the few times I did - I HOLLERED... I know that LC's and books and all that say to not make a big deal of it but I really did. I let her know that biting me was UNACCEPTABLE. She would usually do it when she was really tired and would sort of forget what she was doing. My yelping would scare the bajeezus out of her but when she'd go back to nursing, she was SOOOOOO careful.
Eczema blows. Do you notice if it's dry skin related? or food/allergy related? If it's dry skin - vaseline is a miracle salve. Rub him down after baths, possibly even limit baths to every other or every 2nd day.
As far as supply... You are doing good - remember there are always peaks and valleys. Keep at it. Try nursing him before his solids (I would have to nurse Avery at like 4:30 when we got home before her dinner). Maybe pump at night before you go to bed - to stimulate more production. Try reading a book or reading a really bad celebrity gossip magazine while you pump to be able to relax a little.
And if supplementing with formula is what you end up needing to do to make you all happy, then you are NOT a failure at ALL!!!! You are an amazing mama!
