Introducing the bottle when BF

I pumped for the first time today and DH introduced the bottle to DD, which went pretty well being the first time.

BUT, since I've been exclusively BFing so far, I have no clue how much to pump....today I got a little over 3 oz.

DD is almost 3 weeks old....can anyone give me a clue as to how much is a good amount to have for bottle feedings so I'm not pumping too little or too much?

TIA!

  • My son is 3 weeks too and when I pump I usually get 3-4 oz.  We will give him that much and he usually eats it like a champ.

  • you can never "pump too much"..... pumping more than baby needs is a good thing, get some freezer bags and store it for when you need it!

At 3weeks DS was taking about 3oz at a time from a bottle. They generally take more from a bottle than the breast. You can start with 2oz and see if the baby wants more and kinda see what she will take. If she wants more and you have more, give her more........ if you gave her all you pumped and she wants more, put her on the breast and you know she takes more than 3oz..........

Good idea to give a few bottles a week to get her used to going between breast and bottle. DS started with one bottle every evening for a few weeks, now he gets 1-2 bottles on the weekends and MAYBE one during the week, but he has no problem going back and forth!

  • I am still trying to figure that out since we just started doing bottles more regularly since I am back to work. ?Mh did 4oz bottles this week and it seemed to work. ?When we did bottles in the beginning we just did a random amount like 2 or 3 oz and I figured if it wasn't enough she would just want to eat sooner after that bottle and I would just feed her.?

  • i think i read somewhere that at that age they should be getting b/w 1.5 to 3 ounces every 3 hours, but if you can pump more, you can always freeze it, if you are planning on going back to work. i would pump for 15 minutes and see how much you can get. maybe start with 2 ounces per bottle and see if DD is satisfied.
  • I pump until I am empty. Up until recently, I was pumping about 5oz per side. DD would eat 4 oz so I have a nice stash. Now, I get about 3oz per side.
  • I get about 3 to 4 oz per session on average.  I freeze most of it so I have a good stash ready when I start work (which is Monday and I have about 35 oz in the freezer).  I've heard that you should continue pumping for a minute or so after your're empty, and I try to do that unless I'm busy doing something else.  I also recommend Lansinoh freezer bags.  They are very easy to use and thaw when you need them.
