How long to avoid painted house?

We are having the nursery, master bedroom and hallway painted today and tomorrow. I am going to stay at a friend's house tonight. I am thinking about spending tomorrow night away from home too. Do you think that should be ok for the paint to dry/fumes to disperse? TIA.

Re: How long to avoid painted house?

  • One day with the windows open should be fine.  Newer paints (unless oil based, which I'm guessing you didn't do) do not have many fumes anymore, and most are safe to use during pregnancy if in a well ventilated room.

Ah, open windows, that would be nice.... Ironically the previous owners painted and then wrapped every window in the house shut. They were very excited to tell us that none of the windows opened when we did our walk through. Who does that? Seriously? When we moved in I had to force a window open upstairs for safety's sake.

We are getting new windows next month, but right now the windows don't open.

  • My OB has said that there really isn't any reason to avoid paint fumes any longer, that's just kind of holdover from the days when paint had more nasty stuff in it than it does now.  I think one day is definitely erring on the safe side.

  • I think it still depends on the paint. We're using low VOC paint our bathrooms and no VOC for the nursery and still spending at least two nights away. Most harmful things in paint can't be smelled. You really do need to ventilate the rooms somehow.
  • That sucks that the windows don't open! I guess keep the doors open at least. But maybe spending one day out of the house to play it safe is fine.

We finally started painting our nursery yesterday! And be "we", I mean "I", lol.  So much fun! I'm paying the price today b/c I'm sore & exhausted, though!

The window in the nursery is actually the one we forced open, along with an extra bedroom. So I can open those, and leave all the doors to the other rooms open, that should help. It's completely ridiculous, I agree. The previous owners were charachters. During the walk through, the wife shows me a coat closet and says "you can keep all your fur coats in there." We live in Maryland, and I'm 30, seriously?
