MRI Mamas come in

I am looking for some advice on MRI's for toddlers.

A quick history.  DS has an arachnoid cyst on his left ventricle in his brain.  He had a fenestration 6 months ago to try to drain the cyst.  He has had MRI's before but this is going to be different because of how active he is now.  His follow up MRI's are just a T2 scan which lasts less then 5 minutes.  We go to a Children's hospital so after the intial sedated MRI they allow one of us to go with him for the MRI.  His last scan was 6 months ago right after surgery so he was still a bit sedated.  Before that he had just turned a year so he wasn't too active.  I was able to lay on the table with him and rest my head on him to help keep him laying flat.

So fast forward to now: we have an appointment on Wednesday for a follow up MRI.  DH will be going along but I am worried about how we will keep DS laying flat long enough to do the scan.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Any tips or tricks to make this go smooth?  If this scan comes back clear we could not have to do another one for a year.  DS just turned 2.  TIA.

Re: MRI Mamas come in

  • my 2 year old had light sedation.  There's no way he would have sat still.

  • DD just had one at the beginning of the month.  It was sedated.  That age just isn't capable of being still for that length of time.
  • Thanks for the replies ladies,  I do appreciate them.  Since I was feeling some anxiety about it I called our Children's Hospital today to discuss this.  Since his scan lasts 5 minutes we are still set to do it without sedation.  We will try with me laying down on top of him and if we need to they said we could give him an oral sedative to just make him sleepy.  Since it is so short they hate to sedate him if they don't have to.   I pray we get a clean scan and then we won't have to worry about it for a year!
