Success after IF

Do you ever wake a baby - that is gaining weight?

I wake DD often.

Sorry I haven't been on much, but life with 2U2 is challenging.  We haven't made it out of the house yet (well me alone with both).  I am lucky that DD is a good baby, so that makes 2U2 easier.  She won't take a pacifier, but I'm ok with that.  DS didn't either...

She sometimes sleeps longer than 2 hrs during the day. (in one stretch).

I am so not used to having a low maintenance baby.  DS was a handful and still is...

She is 7wks and not sleeping through the night or anything (she bedshares with me most of the night), but she is a good napper and sleeper.  DS woke SOOOOO many times even at 11months, but she is not that bad at all.

  • I wouldn't at her age, unless she looked skinny.  If she looks filled out I'd let her be.

  • thanks cmw&tdm!
  • My pedi said as long as she/he is gaining weight and is at a normal weight for their age, then not to wake them after 2 weeks old.

  • If BFing then YES just to astblish supply, but if bottle feeding then no. I would get the extra sleep.

PS. I am happy to hear she is so much better/low mantinince than #1. It gives me hope if we ever decide to have a second.

    thanks cmw&tdm!

You're welcome.  Glad to hear everything is going well.

  • I never woke the baby.  She sometimes napped as long as three hours at a stretch.  I figured if she was sleeping, she needed the sleep.

  • At 7 weeks old?  Not a chance.

  • I stopped waking to nurse in the middle of the night at 4 -5 weeks when I was confident dd was gaining weight (she had been at all her appointments but I wanted to be sure).  I never woke her from a day time nap to nurse.

I'm glad your dd is so easy going and making things easy for you right now!

  • I guess this isn't the popular opinion, but I did.  I wanted them to eat during the day and sleep longer at night, so I wouldn't let either of them go longer than 3 hours between feeds during the day.  Then at night, I would let them go.  After 3-4 months, I stopped doing that because they are both not great nappers, so I would have been so happy that they were sleeping, I wouldn't want to wake them up.  Good luck!

ETA:  It is a scary thought, going out alone with the 2u2...but once you do it the first time, you will see it isn't as bad as you think.  Just wear DD, and have DS walk or carry him too - you can do it!

  • Im sorry but I NEVER woke my girls even as newborns.  They weren't good sleepers and I wouldn't touch them haha.  But they were gaining weight fine and were otherwise 100% healthy.  I would wake them if they weren't gaining well or whatever!

  • no need to wake a baby that is gaining weight... no way.  My boys all STTN at 8 weeks - there was no way in hell you would catch me waking them at night to feed!! :)
  • Never.

  • I have only woken him if he's taking too long of a nap in the later part of the day.  I don't want to mess up bedtime :)  It never pays though..he's grumpy if he's woken up before he wants to be Stick out tongue
  • Well, with two, we used to wake them to eat at the same time at night.  We stopped that around the one month mark to encourage longer stretches of sleep, and it worked!!!

'During the day, I wake them every 3 hours to eat, religiously.
