Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What is your baby up to?

I was just wondering what some of your LO's were doing at this stage. My DS is about 11 weeks, and he seems like he's not really doing a lot of what the baby books say. He smiles and coos, but has no arm control or what appears to be no desire to bat at things, etc.. Plus, he's only able to stay up for about an hour at a time. What are other baby's doing?

Re: What is your baby up to?

  • N still does a lot of "napping" throughout the day.. He rolls from his belly to his back and has made some attempts from his back to his belly (just ends up on his side though) He smiles and coos sometimes but no laughing yet.. He's still eating anywhere from 2 to 4 hour stretches during the day and about 3-4 hr stretches at night. Everyone keeps telling me the 3 month mark is when all the magic happens.. we'll see!

  • My baby is almost 5 weeks- he coos and aahs and smiles, but no laughs yet and the smiles have only been once or twice. He bats at his toys, has turned over once, but that's it so far! He will turn on his side and he follows us with his eyes and we do tummy time. He's up a lot actually...2-3 hrs between naps in the day time, only 1 hr between in the early morning and late evening. He still sleeps a lot, but not through the night. He doesn't like the swing but likes the bouncy seat. He prefers to sleep on me and be on me most of the time. He seems to like laying on the floor on a blanket and just looking around and he likes my hair. He's started grabbing it and my necklaces. I'm excited to see more activity!

  • My LO is about 11 wks, she sleeps thru the night, and is awake mostly all day with a catnap thrown in here and there. She eats 31oz while she's awake, she bats at toys sometimes, follows sounds and things with her eyes and head, rolls on her side usually only when she's sleeping though. We do tummy time & she generally hates it, but does pretty well. She still has little fists except when she's eating, then she's got a death grip on my hands. She coos alot and smiles at us and her toys that make noise, pukes when she's strapped in the carseat, sticks her tongue out all the time, and she kindof makes laughing noises, but it's more of a happy gasping "eeee" sound than a laugh, and she enjoys when people whisper at her.

  • Smiles, giggles, coos, makes noises in response to us talking to her, she reaches out to grab things above her head, holds her head up while holding her, turns from side to side. She has 2 two hour naps a day, sleeps through the night, and is a big mover in her sleep, she will wake up in a completely different position than what we put her down in. She does tummy time and holds her head up the entire time. It's like she can't relax on her tummy unless she is in her stroller.

  • My LO is 5 weeks old, he is looking at things more, we've had a few half smiles, he grunts and makes noises, but I wouldn't say he was cooing or ahhing yet.

He sleeps 5.5 hours at a time at night, is awake during the day for a couple of hours at a time.

He makes lots of eye contact but doesn't really reach for anything or grasp anything.

  • Wow, see after reading all these posts I feel like he's "behind". He totally sleeps through the night (8:30 - 5), but all these awake time things he's not even close. He hates tummy time. He can hold his head up pretty well for shorter periods of time thought. He does smile, laugh and follow objects. He loves watching his brother and mobiles, etc... may be he's more of any observer than a do-er. But I still just feel like I'm failing him.
  • My son is smiling, laughing, and coooing. he rolls over and tries to sit up all the time. he drools quite a lot. he bats at his toys loves bath time. today he had his first tear fall. ohhh he is up most of the day and sleeps through the night. and he drinks a lot of breast milk i feel like i walk around with him attached
  • My little man smiles a lot, I have gotten a few laughes out of him, he "talks" back when I'm talking to him.  He sleeps from around 8pm - 5am.  I know he naps during the day, but since he's in daycare, I'm not exactly sure for how long (but if he can sleep through all the screaming, I say go for it).  He has pretty good head control, likes his Boppy and hates tummy time...so he isn't rolling over just yet.  He loves to be able to sit up and look around him to see what's going on.  If it's moving, he wants to watch it (his mobil or a ceiling fan seem to be his fav's).  And he likes to put blankets or toys in his mouth (and I'm fine with this since nothing he is given is small enough for him to choke on and it shows that he can control his arms if he wants to).

  • I feel the same way!! I feel as if she's behind....all she does recently when she's awake is scream because of gas....during her rare quiet awake times she'll smile and make faces at me and sometimes coo, but not often. She doesn't roll, as she hates the mat. She moves her legs a ton but her arms she's not quite sure what to do yet....she follows us with her eyes and has just started batting at objects that make noise and will raise her head to a 45 degree angle for a short time....I also feel like i'm failing her as i'm  a SAHM and not getting her calm enough to participate in activities....hopefully her colicky stage will pass...I thought the two month mark would be a new beginning....let's hope three month mark will bring her comfort finally

Don't feel that way!! EVERY baby is different. You're probly right that he's an observer...and some babies are just chill- if he was behind you pedi would tell you! I bet he'll surprise you with some new "tricks" soon Smile
