Success after IF

Whole Foods?

I am about to make a trip to Whole Foods.  For most people this isn't a big deal...but it is almost a 1 1/2 hour drive for me.

So, what are your "I must get at Whole Foods" items? I am taking a cooler with me, and I plan to fill it to capacity.

It is next to impossible to get organic foods anywhere near home, so I may start making this trip pretty frequently.

What should I add to my grocery list???

Re: Whole Foods?

  • I buy as much of our fruit there as possible, and sometimes meat. Especially fish. I do all my other grocery shopping at Kroger.

  • Bulk grains are the only things I find worth buying at WF.  I don't like their organic fruit as it usually travels very far.  The local stuff is fine but it's 3x the price of the farmer's market so that's a no go for me.  If I had no access to any organic items closer to me or at my own store I suppose I'd get some more stuff there but honestly we don't do a whole lot of organic.  I get our meat from the farmer's market.  Locally raised is more important to me at this point.  Maybe some whole wheat pastas - the 365 store brand of things is pretty good.  Oh, their plain basic tomato sauce is great and has no added sugars.  Also greek yogurt is usually more readily available there.  And well...seeing as how it's October and all I bet they've got some great fall/pumpkin/Octoberfest beers :)

  • I buy their nitrate free, organic hot dogs for my son there and some oftheir deli meat.  I also like their hummus and large amout of gluten free products.  Also, if you buy frozen food for your child (chicken nuggest, etc), they have healthier alternatives than at a regular store.

  • Meat.

Handsdown, I buy all my meats from Whole Foods. Also, eggs, cheese, and milk- or anything that normally has a lot of hormones in it.

  • I love, love, love their fresh, market-made chicken sausages.  I especially love the chicken with spinach and feta, chicken with sundried tomato, actually all of them.  Those with a nice baguette and lambic beer make my favorite dinner.  I like their meat department in general - the kabobs are to die for.

This is interesting and remind me that a friend of mine's mother, who was the dean of agriculture at Cornell, was chatting recently about how the most recent studies show that the hormones in cows are not showing up in milk.  And the levels of mastitis are the same in large production hormone-fed cows as large production organic cows (sorry, some of my terms are wrong).  So the key here is not organic so much as local and small.  Isn't not known yet for meat but is true of milk.
