Infertility

When to take Clomid? Day 3-7 or 5-9?

Hi! I've been TTC since the end of November 2009. I have unexplained infertility issues. I am on my second month of taking Clomid. The first month was 50 mg, then my doctor increased it to 150 mg for this month. My cycles run from 32-35 days with a 15-16 day luteal phase. My doctor always tells me to take my Clomid on day 3-7 of my period. I was talking to a friend that has taking Clomid three times with success when she took it day 5 -9. She also had a 35 day cycle and that's the reason why she did that. Has anybody else done this before and it worked?

Re: When to take Clomid? Day 3-7 or 5-9?

  • I started out taking it 5-9 and by the time I went in for my first monitoring appointment, on CD9, I had already ovulated. I switched to 3-7 and it worked better for me.

Is your RE monitoring you closely while on Clomid? Ultrasounds and bloodwork during your cycle?

ETA: I should have been more specific..when I say "worked better for me" I meant that I ovulated later (more of a normal time) during my cycle, I didn't mean that I was successful while on Clomid.

  • After taking clomid this month day 3 -7, I got my positive OPK on day 16. I am waiting for AF this week. Tongue Tied I have my doctor several times about getting lab work done and he says no. They say it is not neccessary with Clomid. He is going to give me clomid for several months to see how it goes. I found out my insurance won't pay for a specialist until you have been taking Clomid for a year!! Totally crazy!  Sad

    Whoa...whoa..whoa...

No one should be on Clomid for a year. That is absolutely ridiculous. Clomid is a serious fertility drug and can cause loads of long, permanent problems. Most RE's won't let you be on Clomid for more than 3 months. A year is absolutely insane.

And it is absolutely necessary to be monitored while on Clomid. You could end up with tons of follies and end up with HOM. Or it can thin your lining and cause problems in the future and prevent pregnancy. You can also develop cysts that can cut off the blood supply to your ovaries. This is serious stuff.

You need to find a new doctor and DO NOT take that Clomid until you find someone who will properly monitor you and knows that you shouldn't be on Clomid for a year. As much as it sucks, you'll have to suck it up and pay OOP because being on Clomid for a year just to get insurance to pay is absolutely ridiculous.

  • are you sure your insurance requires a year of Clomid?  and not just a year of TTC?

  • My doctor said we would just do the Clomid for about 4 months, then go from there. Not sure what going from there means, but the last time I called to get my 150 mg clomid prescription called in, my doctor's nurse asked me which insurance I was on and told me that they didn't pay to see a specialist until you have been taking clomid for a year. I know you are not suppose to take it for more than 4 months is what I have heard before. If I get a visit from AF this week, then I am thinking about switching to another OB doctor that specializes in infertility. I just know it's really hard to get an appt with her. Tongue Tied
  • As for getting lab work and stuff done, they said there was no need. I also have a friend that was taking clomid and her doctor told her there was no need for lab work. So, I am totally upset and confused on what needs to be done.
