Expectant Mothers - homemade gifts

Do you like them?

Or do you really want people to buy from your registry?

I'm sentimental, so I like them but don't want to assume everyone does.

I have so many pregnant friends right now and one in particular is Joel's coworker who threw us a BEAUTIFUL and extremely special shower.  I would like to make her a blanket that has a super plush fabric on one side, plain fabric on the other (but cute pattern), and satin trim.  I could buy a blanket, but I think it is a little more special if it is a one-of-a-kind because someone made it for you.

Thoughts?

Re: Expectant Mothers - homemade gifts

  • I like homemade stuff (moreso the "cuter" stuff, though - we got some randomness!).  We got A LOT of blankets - but I tried to make sure to display the homemade ones.

  • i love them - but, i also try to throw in something off the registry
  • I love the homemade/sentimental stuff.  I am also a baby blanket hog - I love them.  Avery still uses her baby blankets and probably will for a long time to come.

  • I'm with kat. I usually do something off the registry, plus something that takes a little more thought.

  • One of my MIL's friends made an adorable blanket for DS and I loved it!  She embroidered the back with a "Made with Love for DS From X" and it makes me think of her every time we used it.

Maddie does too, especially the minky ones with the dots.  She calls them her meatball blankets and is very territorial over them.

And I'll definitely get something off the registry too. :-)

  • I got a handmade nursing cover (made by my bff) and then a basket of store bought nursing goodies to go with it.  They were all small inexpensive items but the thought that went into it was so very special.

  • I always love homemade gifts and especially when it came to baby. SIL knitted a blanket for her (I had no idea she could knit), my co-workers mom knitted two blankets and ChristiCat knitted an ADORABLE little outfit for her. I loved them all and will cherish them forever. They're far more personal than anything I registered for.

There will be plenty of uncreative people (like me) to buy them gifts from their registry so don't sweat it.

  • I love the homemade. SIL has made both girls photo albums and crocheted Abby a blanket when she learned how to. Love it!

For her shower I sent a diaper cake since I couldn't attend and/or host and made her a little taggie blanket and bought something off her registry.

  • Thanks for your feedback everyone!

I did end up making her a blanket this weekend - and thankfully my mom is in town and could help with the binding.

I didn't find a fabric that seemed to go with how she described the room she has set up for her baby.  But I did find some TAMU fabric and white minky fabric with bumps on it (Maddie has a pink Target blanket like this that she calls her meatball blanket because I guess she thinks the bumps are like meatballs).  It turned our really well... until I put the Satin trim on.  It is still OK but that satin trim really gave me a run for my money so there are imperfections here and there (I learned that if I had a "walking foot" on my sewing machine it wouldn't have been so hard... but I don't).

When it's laid on the Aggie side up you can't really tell and it's white-on-white on the reverse so it's not glaringly obvious.

I went ahead and bought some things off the registry too.

I need to hand-tack the mitered corners of the satin binding tonight and then I'll post pics.  It's super cozy and the only place I could find one online like it was $50 on Etsy.

Here's a link to the one on Etsy.

  • Here are some pics (finally).  She loved it, imperfections and all!

This is how I presented it (the entire back is the white dotted minky fabric), tied with a blue bow since she is having a boy:
