Hey ladies . . . I'm hoping to join you all soon, but my LO is not being very cooperative. Anyway, I am trying to make some decisions regarding whether or not to schedule an induction, and I could use some advice. To make a long story short, scheduling the induction may make a c/s more likely. I have been stuck at 2 cm for weeks now despite all my best efforts , and I might have the option of getting induced this week instead of next.
Anyway, I plan to BF when LO comes. My brain is not working, and now I am wondering if my milk may come in later, or if I may have more problems in general BF'ing LO?
Did anyone have an induction that didn't progress, end up with a c/s, and have a successful time BF'ing? Would love to hear that!
TIA!
Re: Question for c/s mamas (especially those induced)
I'm sorry you aren't having any progress.
I was induced but did not end up in a c/s. I heard that the chances of a c/s were higher as well but if you are already at 2 cm I would think you will progress with Pitocin just fine.
As far as BF, your body will know that you are no longer pg as soon as your placenta is removed (delivered). That is what releases the hormones I believe. (I could be wrong but I think that is what I was told)
I didn't have a C/S, but I was induced (PROM), and I was able to BF successfully until I had to stop for medications (non-related to the induction).
Not all inductions end in a C/S. Think positively! Despite the induction, I had a beautiful, perfect and even (gasp) orgasmic birth with no damage or stitches at all, a perfect baby boy, and everything really went right. I had planned to go all-natural, so having pitocin and an epidural was hard to take...but it all went perfectly.
FWIW, the trigger for milk production is when your placenta fully detaches from your uterus. There is research that shows a C/S can sometimes make BF a little trickier, but I think that has more to do with the recovery. Your hormones for breast milk will kick in regardless of how the placenta emerges.
Good luck and we'll see you soon!!
hey lady! i know you asked about women who had c-sections but i thought i'd share my story. i was induced at 39w2d for high blood pressure. i did not like my induction at all. i was in the hospital for over 60 hrs before i had lilly. when i went in i was 1cm dialated and about 40% effaced. they first put a balloon up my vag and that dialated me to 3cm and 70% effaced. then i was on pit for 2 days and that didn't do anything. i thought for sure i'd need a c-section, but once they broke my water i was good to go. it took 3 days for my milk to come in (btw, they don't count day of delivery as a day) and the whole time i was in the hospital everyone was acting like that was such a weird thing. dumbasses.
i can not believe you are 40 weeks. happy due date!! i am sure you're uncomfortable but if i had to schedule an induction, i would make it as late as possible. i can tell you i was a lot more comfortable at home than i was being stuck in a hospital with a balloon up my vag or with pit pumping through me. good luck hun!
I was induced at 37.5 weeks due to low fluid, and did not have a c/s. I was concerned about the higher risk of c/s too, but remember, odds are still in your favor for a vaginal delivery. And we BF. There are many, many moms who are induced or have a c/s and have success with BFing.
Try not to stress about what is out of your hands at the moment. Rest up and take each day one day at a time!
I was induced just shy of 40 weeks due to low fluid/high BP. I labored for about 36 hours from the first insertion of Cytotek to Pitocin to my c/s. Stella was just too big to fit through my pelvis.
Stella latched on like a champ from the beginning. My milk took 4 days to come in and I ended up supplementing 2 bottles of formula one day (the day my milk came in actually!). I wish I had just kept nursing but she lost 1 whole pound in the hospital and I was concerned.
Good luck and we can't wait to see you over here!
Hey you! I hope Lilly is doing well. I see your updates on FB from time to time.
Thanks for the well wishes. Time has really flown by. I'll be honest with you - I'm not all that uncomfortable. I am just freaking out about the fact that my early leave from work is fast turning into 3 weeks before the baby is even born! My DH is starting to freak out about money, and there is not much that we can do, but it would help if I had a reson for staying home now, kwim?
Anyway, I'll keep you posted, and hopefully, will join PAL soon!
I was 1.5cm, 80% and "soft" when we scheduled my induction (I was around 1-1.5cm for several weeks leading up to the induction). On the induction day I was 2cm when I went in. I didn't need to have my cervix ripened with cervadil or anything and we started with pitocin. My c/s came 12 hours later when I got stuck at "7 and stretchy." DS's head just wouldn't descend any further and open the cervix with more pressure because 1) it's a huge head and 2) he was face-up. In hindsight I might do the induction again, but I would want to be more assured that the baby is in the prime position for delivery. Basically I had to have a c/s because he turned face-up and we didn't know that when we started the induction (a week prior he was in perfect position).
I'm not a good candidate for VBAC now for various reasons, one of them (from my joking doctor) being big-headed babies. I really wish I could go for VBAC, so the fact that I never can makes me sort-of regret the first induction all together.
ETA: I forgot to add the BF experience - I was able to latch him around 2 hours and my milk came in at 1.5 days. I had no problems BF at all.
I was not induced, but had already been laboring and didn't know. I had a c-sec and there was no issues BFing at all. I had been leaking colostrum since like week 24 of pg so I had no issues the first couple of days with colostrum. And he latched on like a champ. The next day after I got home from the hospital, so 4 days after the c-sec, I knew for sure my milk had come in.
GL! Hope you make some progress soon!
I had a c/s (elective and scheduled not induced) and didn't have a successful time with BFing. Maybe I could have pushed myself harder to BF but by the time I decided to quit, I was crying because my nips hurt so bad. Jax wasn't getting hardly anything out and he was a big boy who wanted to eat and since he wasn't getting anything out he decided to just start chomping on my nips (literally chewing on them!). My milk came in on day 4 post c/s and I started pumping then which has been quite successful, needing just a little formula supplement here and there (which my doctor actually encourages with BM babies for the added iron). I did try to BF again a couple of weeks ago just to see if he would even latch on...nope just wants his bottles!
GL, my issues BFing were all my own, I don't think my c/s had anything to do with it!
Oh and a (somewhat) success story. When my mom had me, her water broke, she went through labor and I just wasn't coming down and finally went into distress so they had to do an emergency c/s. My mom BFed with me, but had to stop because she had a vertical incision (eek!) and I was so big (10lb13oz at birth) that it just hurt too much to have me sitting on her belly. So it was successful (as far as her being able to produce and me latching on) for 3 weeks but just hurt so she stopped.
This is EXACTLY what happened to me...broken water, pit, 40+ hours of labor, and 2+ hours of pushing, but he was not coming down, so I had an unplanned c/s. My milk came in 4 days after the c/s. We had a rough start to BFing because DS had to get formula during his stay in the nursery for jaundice, and then there were latch issues. But I stuck with it and it's much better now. Don't be discouraged...induction or c/s or not, you can do it!
