My DS has been so excited about Halloween & Pumpkins. Went to the pumpkin patch and he loved it!
Yesterday I took him to see my parents neighbors outdoor decorations. They light up and some are kinda scary -sculls & weird ghost figures that move. Poor DS freaked out and ran so fast the opposite direction.
Then we put some cute decorations on our patio - a smiley ghost that lights up and our pumpkins. During the day DS was fine but when we looked at them again at night he got scared and kept saying "scary".
I don't think my DS is going to make it through trick-or-treating!!!
Any other LO's like this too? Any advice?
Re: Any Lo's scared of Halloween Decorations?
Will you be taking him out to Trick or Treat this year?
There is a BIG if....if I can get him to try on his costume without running and screaming or if I notice him calming down a bit, then yes....otherwise he will be staying in with Mommy while I hand out candy and try to assure him that he's okay.
My DS likes to dress up but he trembles when we see Halloween decorations in the store. I always ask him what he is scared of, and for example one time it was a big blow up spider, so I told him the spider wasn't scary, he was nice. We stopped at looked at the spider, and again I said, "see he's not scary, he's nice" and eventually he giggled and said "spider's nice!"
I try to tell him that what ever he is scared of is not scary and that I am right there and it's ok. However, if he does not seem to relax, I repeat that it's not scary and it wont hurt him, but we don't have to stay, and we move along. We will do the same thing trick or treating. Plus we are only taking him to friends houses to say hi, and to show them his costume, so I don't think he'll be too scared if it's familiar. I really don't want him to be freaked out though because it's supposed to be fun and I know he's truly afraid, so if anything seems like it will be too scary we will just try to avoid it.
DD is terrified of the halloween decorations at the store. She doesn't have a fear of costumes, so she will be dressing up and going out this year. I'm going to take her trick o treating at the mall. It's during the day, and they dont have scary decorations. For the evening, I will take her out at dusk, when there is enough light for it not to be scary. Also, she's still very young and doesnt need a ton of candy. (her bag is tiny) So I only plan to have her out there for about 15 mins..or shorter if she does start to freak.
Halloween is a big deal at our house, so we are trying hard to get her comfy and over her fear.
