Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Oh no! BF and EP please help.

I just started my first post partum period and I've heard that your milk supply tanks, but whoa! I'm only producing about 25% of what I normally do. How long does this last for and is it every time you get your period from here on out?

I'm already having a VERY difficult time keeping up since I'm back at work.

  • I never had any decrease in BM from my period, but maybe it's different for everyone.  Hopefully, it was just a rough day.  Just drink lots of water and BF and pump every 3 hours or so to get it back up.  I'm taking Fenugreek but I don't know that it's doing anything.  GL!

  • It's really common a few days before through the first few days of your cycle.  My pump output was next to nothing and DD was taking more while I was gone since she was getting less from me in the AM.  Definitely do the Mother's Milk tea, More Milk Plus, something like that.  Maybe 4-5 days into it DD cluster fed one entire day, no nap, just constant eating, and it got my supply back up.  GL!

  • Very common....and it varies by person, as you can see.  My supply would come back within a few days of AF starting.  But it would dip around ovulation, too.   It's hard when you pump, because then you know how much you are dipping!

At any rate, have read that increased Ca/Mg can combat a reduced milk supply due to ovulation and menstruation, so you could try a supplement?

I did the calcium/magnesium supplement with my dd and it worked well.  kellymom.com has good info about it and the amount to take.
  • Thanks so much everyone! I'm defintely going heed your advice (fenugreen, ca/mag supps). I couldn't believe how much my supply has gone done when I haven't done anything else differently.

:( Hopefully this is temporary and I'm not drying up.
