I have been taking a Zantac regiment since college for acid reflux. With this pg, it just wasn't doing its job anymore, so I bumped up to Zantac 150 (with dr permission, of course).
A couple months ago, they offered me nexium in a prescription, but I declined at the time because the Zantac 150 was working. A couple weeks ago, it quit working and I started getting woken up in the night with heartburn. Not.cool.at.all.
So last week, I asked for the nexium. Turns out, my insurance won't cover nexium, but does cover a similar (though not generic) drug, protonix. It's WORKING!!! I just wanted to share--there is hope. If you are suffering and miserable, talk to your dr!
Re: Heartburn sufferers UNITE! (or at least come in...)
Haha, I must have posted like 2 seconds before you about my heartburn. I am on pepcid and it's not working anymore I will have to ask my Dr. about Nexium.
Glad it's working for you!
And I just posted on yours telling you that protonix is working for me!
We need to jinx or something!
I responded on WoolyPetals thread but Protonix is seriously the best drug ever made!
I'm totally suffering, but just sticking with Tums for now. Sometimes it does the trick, sometimes it doesn't.
I got tired of the 5-6 tums per day plus occassionally needing them in the middle of the night. I'm serious. I'm currently wondering why I held out so long. I feel SOOOO much better!
Ditto!

What?!??!
My insurance wouldn't cover nexium (presumably because it doesn't have a generic), but when my pharmacy tried to send the generic protonix through, they wouldn't cover that, either and said they'd only cover the name brand! So why not cover the nexium to begin with?!?!! WTH? Oh well, all I care about is that it works and it's safe (class B, just fyi).
I did exactly what you did. I'm on Protonix as well since last Tuesday and it's working wonderings. I have had a couple of spells in the middle of the night but nothing as extreme as what I was experiancing before. I was waking up choking on my own vomit. Nasty! I have still been taking tums too as needed. I'm glad you are feeling better, and I feel your pain it's the worst!
my heartburn turns to reflux which turns to me throwing up. i sleep with 3 pillows and still get woken up from a sleep to throwing up.
We are going the natural way, so no medication for me by choice. I have altered my diet, eat every 2 hours, and don't eat past 7pm and not much to drink immediately before going to bed and it works.
I take papaya tablets 3-4 times a day, ginger root tablets 3-4 times a day and peppermint oil and these three combined work 80% of the time, i'd say 1-2 nights a week i have trouble sleeping due to heart burn/reflux. But, just our own personal opinion, we don't want any medication, deemed 'supposedly' safe for taking while pregnant put into my body.. especially with wanting a natural childbirth.
Glad it's working for you though and that you're feeling better
You could ask your doctor for samples as well. That's what I got is 5 boxes of samples. You could get lucky!
Have you tried milk? Milk sometimes worked for me when the Zantac wasn't and I had taken tums already. Good luck!
I have heard about the Papaya tablets. I am going to see if my Whole foods has them today.
I have also tried altering my diet to eat alot more alkaline foods but it isn't working for me.
Oh well.
I am glad you are having luck on the natural route.
I'll definitely be asking for Protonix at my next visit! I've been doing the Tums and Pepcid thing for the last few months and have had no success. Last time I asked my Dr. she said "just put your hands up in the air" and then she demonstrated an action that looked like the YMCA dance. Uh, yeah. Time to get a new Dr....but that's another issue.
My sister is a pharmacist and wasn't a big fan of me taking Protonix due to lack of studies on pregnant women. However, at this point...I'm willing to try anything.
Glad it's working for you ladies!!
FYI - the Protonix takes 7-10 days to become totally effective so hang on...it'll probably work 100% pretty soon.
