Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone else considering stopping BFing at 6 mos?

Since pregnancy, I've been pretty open-minded about if I would be able to breastfeed, and if so, for how long.  I've said all along that I wanted to try to make it 6 months as my first goal.

Well, we're close to 4 months, and I'm finding myself really looking forward to weaning DD.  I don't mind BFing necessarily, but for some reason my breasts don't respond well to the pump, so I am attached to DD constantly. Dh is only able to help @ night when she isn't hungry.

Also, it seems like everything makes DD gassy. I've eliminated all dairy and soda, and now I'm even looking at eliminating onions, peppers, etc.  I'm just ready to eat whatever I want again.

I say all this, but I can totally see me getting to 6 months and deciding to continue on.  We'll see.

  • I originally said 6 months but will prob do a full year. Solids are coming soon which means a little less bfing! My DS already has bottom teeth tho so the only thing that will deter 1 yr is biting!!!

  • Oh wow, our babies are the same age!

No teeth here yet, although she drools a ton.  I've been giving her teething tablets just in case because she's been waking every 2-3 hours lately. ugh.

  • I am on the fence.  DD is almost 5 mths old.  we will see how things are going at 6 mths.  parts of me wants to stop at 6 mths, but parts want to keep going to a year.  or maybe in between, like 8/9 mths.   i take it day by day.....I think it really depends on how her weight is at her 6 mth appt.
  • Once my baby hit 4 months she changed herself from every 2 hours feeding to every 3 hours during the day, started sleeping more at night and we started solids. So you may not be a slave to the BFing as much as you are in the near future!

  • I am going until a year....pending teeth.  :)  Payton has her 2 bottom teeth and we went through a week of her biting me.  (so much so that I had bite marks and little "scabs" from her!)  I was at my wits end and pushed through.  After a week she stopped biting.

I am hoping that with the next teeth she doesn't do the same, but we will see.  I want to avoid formula at all cost, so I will try.  (No offense towards formula, other than when LO was little and I had to use a bit of formula when I had surgery, she got really crampy and upset belly and her reflux was worse!)

  • We are going a year if possible, and the thing that pushes me to keep it up is $$.  I only work part time right now and want to keep it up. Keeping LO on the boob and not formula saves us money, so I am going to keep it up.

  • It took me 3 months to get where I was making enough milk for DS without extra pumping after every feeding, so now that I'm finally enjoying it I can't even imagine weaning.  I told DH maybe not even at 1 year like I had planned.

  • i was only planning to go to 6 months but i'm not sure that will happen.  LO LOVES the boob.  she won't take bottles hardly ever.  when we tried giving her a little formula back in the day she vomited and wouldn't eat the hypoallergenic kind.  and going to EP'ing seems like it kind of defeats the whole purpose.  i just feel like weaning is going to be very traumatizing for her.  we'll certainly discuss it at her 6 month appt., but i'm not so sure how it's going to work.

  • My plan all along was to stop at 6 months. But I really don't want to, now that we're a month away! I think we're going to keep going until we reach a natural ending point, teeth or walking or something like that.

This exactly. I was originally planning 6months, but I think we'll go for a year!

  • Before I had DD I knew I wanted to BF for at least 6 months.  Now that she is here and we are past the hard first few weeks I love it and can't imagine ever giving her formula.

  • My goal was 6 months and I'll probably stop then.  I need to feel normal again!  But, as with anything else, we shall see!  :)
  • I'm in the process of slowly weaning my DD now. Although I have enjoyed BF'ing for the most part, I kind of want my boobs back lol. I want to be able to leave her with my DH or her grandparents, without having to worry about having enough milk pumped, and being engorged/leaking while she's gone. I want my sex drive back. I want to wear my regular bras/clothes. I want to have a drink! lol I want to be able to go out in public and not have to worry about nursing while I'm away (I have done this, even at my brother's wedding reception, in the same room as everyone). I'm kinda getting tired of missing out on things because I'm BF'ing.

I feel like my DD has gotten plenty of the benefits of BF'ing up to now, and I think I would rather wean now before she gets too attached to it, KWIM? She takes bottles easily now, so I don't think she'll miss the boob too much and won't put up a fuss about giving it up.

    GL with whatever you do!

  • I originally said 6 months...and in the beginning didn't think I'd make it 6 weeks. Well here I am at 4 1/2 months and things are going good. I'll probably go longer then 6 months but not a full year (unless I change my mind again). The only reason I would stop at 6 months is because I'm hoping to feel like myself again. It's hard to ever feel attractive or sexy when every 3 hours your whipping your boob out or have a pump attached to you. KWIM? I would also stop if DD got teeth or I wasn't pumping enopugh for her while I'm at work.

    I'm so torn.

  • My goal was 3 months, now I want to make it until 6 months.  BUT...I have to go to an out of town conference next week for 4 days ( Sad ), so we will see what happens when I come back.  Jack already has 1 1/2 bottles of formula per day (just cannot seem to keep up), so the transition to all formula will not be hard on him....but probably will be on me!!

  • My goal was 2 weeks, then 6 weeks.....I made it EPing until 5 months, and today is the day we're stopping altogether.  LO has a few more weeks of stash left, so I feel good that we made it as long as we did.  DS had a horrible latch and went on a nursing strike at 3 months, so I had to EP for a while....and since work has gotten insanely busy, I've not had enough time to maintain my supply and found myself having to supplement too much.  Finally, I just needed the time.  DS is doing well with the transition to formula, and while it's more expensive, he seems equally as happy and healthy as he was drinking BM.  Do what is right for you -- in the end, everyone will be happier!

  • I orginally said I'd only do it 6 months and in the beginning I thought that was impossible b/c I disliked BF'ing so much. But, now I actually enjoy it and panic at the thought of what I'm supposed to do if she were to wake up in the middle of the night and I couldn't nurse her, I think that I'll go as long as it works for us. Someone on this board gave the best advice to me when I posted about having a hard time with bf'ing. She said to take it week by week and I started thinking of it that way, it took a lot of the pressure off.
  • Nope, I hear that's when it gets super easy. I don't love breast feeding, but I love that DS is eating breast milk, if that makes sense. Even lately, it has gotten easy. It used to seem like a hassle to whip out my boob all the time, but now it's no big deal. I just wish DS were better at eating in public (he gets super distracted). I pump at night about 2 hours after he goes down, so I always have a bottle ready so I can get a break and I have a stash in the freezer. I'd like to go for at least a year assuming my supply keeps up and DS still enjoys it.
