Minnesota Babies

Edit =Travel help - First time baby

Ok I know this question get A LOT on the national bards but I thought I would as over here in hopes I could get some "local help" :) I am almost sure I will be going to CA (thanks to a over $100 price drop) in a few weeks.

~ Any helpful hints for me? is there a family security check point (or one that is better then the others)? We would be flying out on a Friday.

~ Can I bring milk on the flight with me?

~ I plan on gate checking his car seat, so that if I am lucky & there is a open seat they will let Mr.A have his own seat (anyone happen to own a car  seat bag that I could barrow, pr know where I could get one cheap?)

~ I will have my unbralla stroller to push him thru the airports.

Ok what am I forgetting (we do have the ablity to check 2 bags so I am thinking most stuff will be checked & only the must (and a change of outfits) will be our carry one

BIG TIME EDIT - He is no longer a lap baby due to the cheap flights I was able to get him his own seat :) now to look for the strap thing (anyone know were I can get one local)

Ok I know this question get A LOT on the national bards but I thought I would as over here in hopes I could get some "local help" :) I am almost sure I will be going to CA (thanks to a over $100 price drop) in a few weeks.

--make sure you are there 2-2 1/2 hrs ahead of time (usually they say an hour to an hour fifteen) but with babies/children give yourself extra time.

~ Can I bring milk on the flight with me?

--Breast milk yes. Otherwise no, you have to buy after the checkpoint the last I heard. I had sealed waterbottles and had to throw them.

~ I plan on gate checking his car seat, so that if I am lucky & there is a open seat they will let Mr.A have his own seat (anyone happen to own a car  seat bag that I could barrow, pr know where I could get one cheap?)

--I'm not sure where you could get one, but I would check out craigslist first.

~ I will have my unbralla stroller to push him thru the airports.

--Awesome idea! Much easier to keep them strapped in somewhere so you can move through the crowds.

Ok what am I forgetting (we do have the ablity to check 2 bags so I am thinking most stuff will be checked & only the must (and a change of outfits) will be our carry one

--Just remember the baggage fees. I reccomend trying to fit things in the carryon. You can also bring a personal item such as a diaper bag, so if you can fit things it may reduce your baggage fees.

Make sure you bring lots to keep him occupied! And when you are taking off and landing feed him so that his ears don't pop and hurt him!

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks for all the helpful hints so far. The 2 check bags are free (well included in our price) We are flying Frontier Airline :)

  • Assuming you are flying out of MSP- I am not familiar with Frontier's terminal so I don't want to give you bad security advice.

If you need milk, you will have to buy it after security.  I highly recommend having something for drinking to help with the ears!

You might check at the gate when you are checking in about open seats.  Another idea is a GO GO Baby.  If your car seat would attach to it, it makes maneuvering an airport much much better!  Then you wouldn't need both your stroller and your car seat.

Think about the stroller & car seat- that is a lot of lugging of stuff through the airport.  On top of dealing with your child(if they are at all fussy).

I would definately keep outfit changes in the carry on.  I am not always the best at this and have had to buy outfits for our daughter or sweatshirts and that is an expense that I wish I didn't have!

~ Any helpful hints for me? is there a family security check point (or one that is better then the others)? We would be flying out on a Friday. Get there early, everything takes way more time with a baby...and have everything ready his birth certificate or SS Card, and have it all out so you don't slow down the checkpoint lines.

~ Can I bring milk on the flight with me? Yes but make sure you get sealed bottles.  When Ian was still on formula I brought a sealed can and water and they let me through with all of it.  There are special provisions when you're a parent.  When I left MPLS I got water for his formula on the other side of the checkpoint but on my way back from DIA I just had my Nalgene filled with water and they let me through.

~ I plan on gate checking his car seat, so that if I am lucky & there is a open seat they will let Mr.A have his own seat (anyone happen to own a car  seat bag that I could barrow, pr know where I could get one cheap?) Don't plan on there being extra seats, most planes today fly at full capacity, and if you did get an extra seat if you put the car seat there they'll probably charge you.  I just did Ian on my lap the whole time...although he was younger so he sat still better.  I wouldn't waste the money on the car seat bags because the airport will give you one that is approved for security purposes.  I used that and it was great I just folded it up and re-used it for the trip home.  It has to be a clear bag so they can do the security check on it and make sure you cinch up all the straps so they don't get tangled or snagged.

~ I will have my unbralla stroller to push him thru the airports. Good idea and you can gate check that as well, and it is really quite slick because it is there when you get off the plane, you just take it down the ramp and leave it where everyone else leaves it and its there when you get off as well.

Ok what am I forgetting (we do have the ablity to check 2 bags so I am thinking most stuff will be checked & only the must (and a change of outfits) will be our carry one  Can't help you with this one because the ONLY thing I checked was the car seat and his stroller at the gate, I carried on everything else.  His clothes and diapers, wipes etc all fit in a small duffel that I kept under the seat and my bag went over head.

  • Thank you all so much for this information as you can see from my update Aiden now will have his own seat :) so that will make travel that much easier :) now I just have to find  one of those straps that attaches the car seat to my carry on.
  • Happy Travels! I really don't have any advice - but we're going to CA right after christmas - would love to hear how things go!
