I'm sorry. I find this post, and many of its responses, ridiculous. Am I the only one who expected to see something different in a post called "bad food"? I mean, none of this stuff is health food, but I hardly consider any of it poison.
The constant over-justifications of every morsel you feed your child, and the general self-righteousness of some mom groups makes my head spin sometimes.
You can't just say, yes, I give my kid chicken nuggets sometimes. Instead, it has to be "yes, I feed my kid nuggets, but they're organic, free range, no filler, breaded in wheat germ nuggets," with the silent insinuation of "not that Tyson crap you might feed your kids." Or, "Yes, I gave my child a single graham cracker one time and hung my head in shame for weeks afterward. I promise to never do it again."
Ok, I'm exaggerating (kind of), but still.
Have I given my kid a cookie? Sure. Do I do it every day? No--not even every week. Do I get my kid her own order of french fries? No, but she's tasted them, and I'm sure at some point down the line, she'll be allowed to order her own occasionally. With a coke. It's common sense to me. Moderation...
I know people are just more informed about nutrition, organic foods, whole foods, etc these days, myself included--and I think that is awesome. You need to be aware of what you're putting in your body. It's crazy not to. But where do you draw the line? I try my best to make good choices, especially for Holly. But I'm sorry-- I feel like the extremists are setting their kids up for food issues. (Coming from someone who has had them!)
Ahem.

Re: From the 12-24 mo board...
I think a lot of moms get caught up in the "overly informed" stuff these days. I was on the CD board and there was a mom there on one of the posts saying that she read an article that suggested running a bleach cycle through your washer after washing your regular clothes (not even CD loads, regular clothes...) because of trace amounts of fecal matter found from your undies.
Some of this stuff is getting a bit ridiculous...
OMG..I'm doomed then, she eats all that stuff except lunch meat and french fries (she likes french fries and will have some of mine if we are out). She has been eating cookies this whole week. Oh well, 2 cookies won't kill her. There was a point she was living off of chicken nuggets!!
ETA: A lot of the people that replied on that board had 12m olds, so my answer would have been no to a lot more of those if she was 12m, so I guess it depends!
yeah, the national board girls have always been "hollier than thou" Nic eats all and pretty often. He eats pretty healthy but also is picky and after working 40 hours a week chicken nuggets and sweet potato fries are an awesome quick dinner.
Nic knows that when he gets to the supermaket he gets a cookie. At least he says thank you.

I admit it, when I first started feeding Ella solids regularly around 10 months, I was definitely picky about what she ate. Now - that girl can eat Go Go (goldfish) with the best of them - we have to hide them in the pantry. We really do try to follow the everything in moderation rule though (which is hard for me and DH sometimes too!). Let's face it - we want quick and we want healthy and that's not always possible.
Side note - has anyone tried other flavors of Goldfish - I'm addicted to the Vanilla and Cinnammon ones. DH loves the Smores one.
OMG..the vanilla ones are evil. Do not--I repeat--DO NOT sprinkle them on ice cream. You'll regret it (as you lick the bowl). I'm afraid to try the S'mores ones. :-)
I think the Bump Boards, specifically the natl ones are way over sensitive about so many issues. It's unrealistic & ridiculous to me.
J has eaten everything on that list and I don't feel bad about it. He also eats hot dogs - gasp! He also intakes ridiculous amounts of fruit...life is all about balance.
I think that's a GREAT idea and will probably steal it. I think they're good for sorting colors too.
Thank goodness Nate is over 24 mos, so I'm free to give him all those things now. LOL
He gets m&ms every single day due to potty training. He gets 2 every time he goes, and he knows it!
I often DO order him his own french fries when we go to CFA. And he knows that they have ice cream there & he wants it too. So I get him the toddler sized ice cream. No big deal. My husband will pick up a happy meal for Nate if he's out with him, and I'd rather him not go to McD's, but I'm not going to freak out over it either.
I really do try hard to buy healthier snacks and even healthier versions of "bad" foods like chicken nuggets and hot dogs, but I don't freak out about that either.

Kira hadn't had those things at 12 months, but she certainly has at nearly 3 years. I think age makes a big difference, and I kinda think those with 12 month olds who answered that way are right on the money for the age. (I'll say I didn't read the comments; I'm not forgiving being obnoxious if that's the case, I'm just understanding not giving 12 month olds those things.
) If they were acting haughty with older toddlers or kids, then they seriously need to relax, at least on occasion, IMO.
And I love learning colors with M&Ms, jenhum! LOVE!

Wow, some of those moms are a lil much...some feel like they have to explain why let their kids eat those things and make sure u know they only do the super healthy ones. It wont kill kids to eat things in moderation!
Natalia-Jack also knows when we go to Harris Teeter that they have cookies and balloons! the lil things in life
Jenhum- I love the idea of teaching colors with the M&M's
ECU- did u know u can trade in the toy or book or whatever at CFA and get ice cream? that might be what u meant by the toddler size ice cream!
This is why I love this board and stay away from the National boards! Caleb eats goldfish almost every day, and often has graham crackers or animal crackers. We had tater tots and chicken nuggets for lunch today. I'll let him have pretty much anything in moderation, whether a taste or a serving.
I hate that some moms are so judgmental!
Oh good grief.
Keira has had ALL of those things and I don't think any are "bad". This kid ate EVERYTHING from a jar. Almost all fruits and veggies and I knew she was eating healthy. And then she tried solids. Out went the balanced meals. She also started refusing all purees so I couldn't even get those down her to even meals out. She is a huge texture freak and eats like 3 vegetables and 2 fruits only, and that is only sometimes. She changes her mind about what she likes now. It's so hard to get ANY food in her, so if she eats chicken nuggets or Chef Boyardee a few times a week AT LEAST SHE IS EATING. The kid is a cracker freak and if I took away her grahams she would DIE. I'm sure of it.
I hate feeding her processed crap but again, if she is eating I'm happy. I think it's crazy how some people can get that way over food. I would love it if she liked more healthy foods and I'm hoping she will adapt the older she gets.
I can say Wesley's tried pretty much everything on that list except graham/animal crackers, chicken nuggets (DH has a horrible fear of him choking on them) and sandwich meat. He has goldfish as a snack in the church nursery, and we've let him have a taste or two of different cookies, ice cream, etc. And he LOVES french fries. I usually tear off the pointy parts, but they're easy for him to hold onto, and he loves anything potato.
Yeah, on occasion my kid eats gummy worms, pizza, hot dogs, chocolate, any kind of cookie or cracker, plus this homemade south african beef jerky stuff from DH's friends. Not to mention paper towels, magazine pages and the goldfish she hid under the couch last week.
She also eats tons of fresh veggies & fruits, lean meats, and whole grains. So whatever.
People are nuts.
