question about rape/pressing charges

my SIL says she was raped when she was 6 years old. she is 18 now. she said she just told her mom, and now her mom wants to go to court over it. she says she knows exactly who did it, etc. etc. is that even possible? i was raped when i was twelve, told my mom when i was fourteen, and nothing was done about it. im just curious if its even possible to press charges after this long? thanks girls.

sorry that happened to you and to your SIL. I would suggest she talk to a lawyer or even call legal aid to see what they would say. I am not sure if they called the cops what they could do if anything.

I thought there was a time limit too, but I'm clearly not an expert. Sorry for you and your sister. I was raped at 19 at college so I took it through the college judicial board and got him kicked out of school. That was a much easier route than going to court. I had a friend going the court round and it was brutal on her.

that was my issue, too. they never called the cops, or had anything done about it. and i dont even know if its worth it to go through all that for an end result thats not favorable for SIL. i dont know , its not my decision, i was just curious. thanks ladies

I don't know what the statute of limitations is on statutory rape or assault on a minor, but I imagine it's pretty long. That being said, being that it was 12yrs ago, proving it could be very difficult - so if it were to go to court it would be very hard on your SIL. The first step would be reporting it to the police.

I'm sorry your SIL experienced that.

yeah, thats what i thought, too. now that im hearing more, it wasnt actually rape, it was molestation. i wasnt sure, emotionally, if court would be the best route, but its not my choice.

My understanding, from working with rape victims/law enforcement/prosecutors in my role in the hospital, is that there is no statute of limitation on rape in the state of NC. If it happened elsewhere, I'm not sure. I see your update that it was molestation vs rape, but just thought I'd let you know.
