3rd Trimester

Panicking. Advice please? (csection&pre-e related)

So I posted earlier in the week about LO having an atrial flutter and that I was at the hospital for monitoring. Well, today was day 6 here, and I was moved from L&D to the cardiac care unit on Thursday. I'm on digoxin to help regulate Ezra's heart, so they're monitoring me here to make sure that the medication doesn't affect me negatively. Now I'm showing signs of pre-eclampsia, so I'm doing a 24 hour urine collection, and my BP is taken every 30 minutes. I was just told I will probably end up with a cesarean, and I'm freaking out. The thought scares me so bad, and I'm afraid of missing out on the whole experience of labor. There's still a chance that they may try a regular induction, but I'm really scared. My birth plan (which I know, is not some kind of binding thing) was to have a med-free birth, and now that's completely out the window. I feel confident about my doctors (I'm in really good hands, at UCLA), but surgery just scares the heck out of me, and I'm worried about any affects it will have on my son. Anyone care to share their c-section experience? Thanks for reading, sorry its kinda long.

  • No adive sorry, but I just want to say. Don't feel bad about the c-section or it not being med free. We would like to go that way seeing as how its better for LO but he will be ok weather your plan turns out the exact way you planned or not. Look at what your already doing above and beyond for DS and he isnt even here yet. T and P for you, but I know you'll be ok!! You a super mom already!

  • I'm lurking, but I had really severe pre-e with my DS who is now 7 months. I started swelling sometime after 24 weeks. I gained 25 lbs of fluid between weeks 32-34. I had 2 hospital stays. When my BP wouldn't go under 180/105 even though I was on the mag they told me 3/3 at 9 pm that they were going to deliver me via csection at 1pm on 3/4. I was already planning on a csection because of some family history concerns (my brother is a hemophiliac and I don't know if I'm a carrier, and I was having a boy and wanted to take precations) but I was told because my BP was so unstable they wouldn't have recommended an induction anyway. I was 35 weeks exactly. They brought me downstairs for prep at 10:30am. I was given a choice of getting spinal anesthesia or having an epidural. Spinal is a one shot deal, while an epidural can be left in for pain management afterward. I elected for the epidural. They set that up and put in a urinary catheter. They did a last minute ultrasound to confirm position and then unhooked me from the fetal monitors. I was wheeled into the OR at 11:40 and they set up everything. He was born at 1:03. He was perfectly healthy, but they told me that because of his prematurity he needed to go get a more thorough work up. I got to snuggle with him a few minutes while they stitched me up. I went into recovery around 1:30. I was there for a while because my BP wouldnt stabilize. That was the last complication I had! Breastfeeding went off without a hitch and both him and I went home 3 days later. I was in pain and needed the meds for the first week. It seemed like I felt better every day the second week and transitioned from percocet to just Tylenol. After week 2 I didn't need any more meds and felt fairly normal. My recovery went really well. I was doing better than a friend of mine who had a natural, uncomplicated delivery a few weeks before me! I know a csection isn't what you had wanted, but I didn't think it was that bad ( I won't try to VBAC, if that says anything :) ) Good luck mama!
  • This would be a very scary first time experience and very understandable to feel this way.  The best news is that they have found these things and you are in the best hands.  Don't beat yourself over your birth plan changes, and all that.

I just got the scare of having to deliver c-section vs version(baby was breech at 39 weeks).  I opted for version knowing that there was a likelihood I was ending up with a c-section.  I did a lot of research and polling and c-sections- especially this type are not as bad as you might worry.  Also, I would much rather have a c-section than go through an induced labor and end up with an emergency c.  Best of luck to you and your little one.  T&P.

  • I had a c-sectiona after 24 hours of labor (no progress...was induced at 39 wks because of pre-e). It was not bad at all. I'm having a planned c-section with this baby, and I'm def looking forward to NOT laboring. Labor HURT!! I went 15 hours with an epi. The c-section was NOTHING. A little sore, but no big deal. I was off of pain meds by day 3 or 4 with the occassional Alleve or Motrin. My advice is to get up and walking ASAP...you'll feel better! FWIW, my friend had a vaginal the same day as me (2 min before me actually)...I left the hospital BEFORE her (48 hours), and she had a 3rd degree tear and was still on pain meds and couldn't pee or poop b/c of pain a week after. I also have another friend with a 6 month old that just had her 2nd surgery to fix a 2nd degree tear. She said next time she's gonna have a c-section to avoid all that again. Yes, both experiences are rare, but do happen. I'm a HUGE baby, and really did well with the c-section.

  • I ended up with a c/s after a 24+ hour labor with #1 - that was kinda rough, only because I labored for so long and they had to put me under for the c/s.

The planned c/s with #2 was SOOOO easy and recovery was even easier. Labor was awful for me (painful/med-free) and I would never attempt a VBAC.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks so much ladies. I only know a few women who have had c sections, and their experiences were not great. I'm trying to stay calm about this, but I've just heard all negative things about c sections, until now, so thank you for giving me a different perspective. Its still not definite what is going to happen, but it helps to know a little bit about what to expect. Thanks again  :)
