We are just exploring some options in case I do get this job. We have had a daycare picked out for years but I admit I am a little afraid of DD getting sick and just all the other "mom" anxiety issues about daycare. My cousin is a former teacher and is currently not working and has nannied in the past. I kind of like the idea of my cousin coming to our house to take care of DD. She will still be able to sleep in like she does currently and her life won't be too disrupted but at the same time I wonder if having her in daycare would be better for social/developmental things.
Also, if you don't mind sharing if you have had a nanny what did/are you paying?
Re: Nanny v daycare
We got a lot out of daycare at that age. He was readied for preschool, (learned to write, learned French words, learned numbers) between 2.5 and 3 - including a lot of potty training.
My kids have been sick, but it passes eventually, it seems. K1 gets sick a lot less often as he did when he was younger. He also gets sick less often than K2.
I recommend doing what you feel is best.
I went back and forth on this for a while, and ultimately decided to send DD to daycare. I am an Elementary school teacher, and feel like a lot of what I've seen in school helped influence my decision - i.e. Kindergarten kids having breakdowns being away from home, being out of school for the first few months on and off because of the exposure to germs, etc.
The good things about a nanny: 1) LO can stay on the same schedule. sleep in, etc 2) You know how clean your house and LO's toys are 3) No rushing around in the morning trying to get to daycare and work on time 4) You can always go to classes, library readings, etc. to help social development
The good things about daycare: 1) If the provider is sick, there is back up... you don't have to worry about someone not showing up and trying to find care at the last second, or being forced to take time off work 2) Curriculum starts at a young age, exposing LO to more than a nanny might 3) Lots of kids around so LO learns how to cope/fit in/share/etc 4) Germs and getting sick aren't always bad - getting sick is not fun, but to build immunities, it is necessary... getting sick now can prevent being sick and missing school when it's important
Sorry this is so long, HTH. Follow your gut and do what feels right :-)
