Hi Ladies,
I am new to the bump, this is my first post since I am only 7weeks pregnant. I am considering a natural birth and wanted to see if anyone had any recs for birthing centers or midwives in the area?
Currently I am seeing Charles St Ob/gyn but have heard the Csection rate at GBMC is very high.
Any advice or recs is greatly appreciated.
Re: Looking for a Birthing center/midwife group in Towson area?
First off, CONGRATULATIONS! I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!!
You'll probably get a lot of responses tomorrow, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in. Having a C-section (or not) generally has more to do with the philosophy of your doctor than the hospital where you deliver. There are a few exceptions, like some hospitals won't do a VBAC, etc.
GMBC does have a higher than average C-Section rate because a lot of other hospitals send their high risk patients there. (I know Carroll County General sends their high risk patients to GBMC.) They are one of the few areas in the hospital that has a level 3 NICU. Also, there are a lot of elective C-sections that occur there.
GBMC is a wonderful hospital, so please don't write it off just because of its higher than average C-section rate.
However, if you really don't want a hospital birth, I hope you find what you are looking for.
Good uck and again, congratulations!

St Joes has midwives, Mercy has midwives, Maryland General has midwives. I think I remember someone I met in real life saying they had a midwife at Sinai Hospital for a vbac. They all have different degrees of interventions though, Mercy being the most well known for natural childbirth and I believe the only one who does a water birth.
Congrats! I go to that same practice and delivered at GBMC. FWIW, I did not have a C-section...it was never really discussed and I was more high risk than others. I also never felt pressure to have any drug interventions during labor (although I did end up choosing to) and had nothing but a wonderful experience. Good luck!
Yes Mercy is the only hospital in this area that allows for a water birth. My friend delivered there in July 09 using Evelyn from Alternative Birth Choices. I gave birth at SB in August 09 and had a fantastic experience. I highly recommend going on the tour that they offer at SB and see what you think. There is also a great group of women that meets once a month at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. If you are interested do a search for the Anne Arundel county birth circle group on Yahoo. GL and congratulations!
