I am going to try, but we'll see how much the grand total will be first. It is a lot of money. I don't think you would be "uncouth" if you didn't do them. There is a lot going on at that time! My friend did not send any out until her child was 3-4 months old!
And I know that you can make them yourself, but this will probably not happen for me. Not unless DH turns into Martha Stewart. I was going to try to make a scrapbook at some point, but making a ton of birth announcements myself does not sound like a fun prospect.
Maybe we'll just order a few for family, or out of town family?

I haven't really looked into it. I am going to look at shutterfly and maybe into having SIL come over and we can make our own, but it is not a priority. He is going to be born close enough to Christmas that we may do our first family Christmas card with a pic of all 3 of us.

We probably won't. We didn't for DS. We sent out a mass email with pictures the day after DS was born.

With DS1 and 2 I did them and included a picture. This time though since I haven't done my thank you cards for the shower, I will be sending those out with a picture.
It really is in my opinion and experience a waste to send them out, especially when most people (like myself) just put them in a drawer or in the back of a cupboard.
I just ordered a token amount for his baby book and my parents. Vistaprint had a sale for 20 free announcements, so I got 20 for $7 *shipping fee*.
I would get a small amount, just so you have them for the baby book and maybe to hang on the fridge. You'd probably spend less than $15 if you hit a sale, Vistaprint is ALWAYS giving away free stuff and discounted stuff.
