Melissa & Doug Choking Hazard?

Several of the toys identified as being for toddlers on the Melissa and Doug website have a choking hazard warning on Amazon.  The warning on Amazon says that the product has small parts and shouldn't be used by children under 3.  But it appears from the Melissa and Doug website that these toys are designed for children under three.

Here's an example from Amazon with the choking hazard warning.  Here's a listing for the same toy on the Melissa and Doug website.  On their website it says that it's intended for children over 18 months and is in the "first play wooden toys" section.  To make things even more confusing, here's a different listing for the same toy on Amazon that doesn't have the choking hazard warning.

I saw the same thing with one of those push toys.

Do you think this toy is really safe for a toddler or not?  Are there different versions of this toy?

  • We have that set and DS is almost 1.  I'm not sure what small parts they are talking about, unless the toy broke in which case I'm sure you would throw it away.

My complaint about all the Melissa and Doug stuff though is that the paint chips.  I'm careful to make sure DS doesn't put any of it in his mouth since that bothers me.

We had the problem with one of the rings on his stacker toy.  I thought maybe it was because he had chucked it in the cat bowl or something.  He's gnawed off some of the paper on the puzzle pieces though.  Luckily he hasn't done it in a while.

  • I'm not sure that that the Amazon warnings always line up correctly. I registered for a toy set that the maker references as 6mo+ but Amazon says it is for 3 years+. I'm going with the manufacturer. They have a much higer stake in safety and proper labeling than Amazon does.
  • I think the warning is more a "CYA" thing for Amazon than an actual danger.  It's been on almost everything I've purchased for kiddo including things that having nothing remotely small about them.

I wouldn't think twice about it.  Always best to just use common sense when you see the actual toy anyway to decide if it's appropriate ;-)

  • My sister got that set for DS for Christmas last year. He was 13 months.  He loves them and plays with them often.  The only choking hazard I can possibly think of if the bell broke open and the bell piece came out.  DS has been playing with them for almost a year and there is nowhere near that much wear on them yet.

  • Speaking of Melissa & Doug toys, I just had to throw away one (new) wooden toy, a caterpillar, because splinters came off the side of the wood. With DD putting everything in her mouth, I didn't think it was a good idea for her to play with it. I was quite disappointed because it looked like good quality wooden toys.

  • We have the same set and DS loves it.  I would always go with the manufactuer warning combined with people's comments if a few people say they had a breakage problem or something of the sort.  And your own opinion if you are able to see and hold the toy.
