anyone eating tuna fish?

I'm craving tomato soup and grilled tuna sandwiches.  I know tuna isn't one of the fish that has the lowest mercury.  Can i eat it?  I think I read somewhere a long time ago, that chunk light is the lowest mercury and to have it no more than twice a week.

Re: anyone eating tuna fish?

  • My dr just told me I could have it about once a week. I think about 6oz.

  • yes, I've started eating about one sandwich of solid white tuna/week.  There are some helpful guidelines if you google search it.. should give you all the info you need to know.

    tastes so yummy!!!

  • I've had it a few times.

Albacore is worse than the regular cheap stuff.

  • My dr said 1/wk is fine.  I just finished a mini tuna sub with provolone, hot peppers and a pickle slice~ YUM!!!

This is only the 2nd time I've eaten it since my BFP.  I was craving it so badly, I couldn't resist.

  • I'll eat it 1x a month max, pregnant or not. We usually have albacore which is worse, but I actually prefer chunk light.

  • Chunk Light is a go about once per week.  Avoid albacore, per doctor's orders.

  • When pregnant w/ DD, I ate it once a week.  For some reason it always sounded good to me.  This pregnancy not so much.  But its not something I'm avoiding altogether.

  • My doc said up to 3 times a week, but chunk light only, no albacore. I'm not comfortable with 3 times a week, but I would consider once a week. Lately I have been eating canned salmon. Its not as tasty as tuna, but less mercury.

  • With my first I constantly ate it but couldn't drain it I would puke, with second I was told 2 times a week is okay, not albacore, but like chunk lite in water!! NO OIL!! I tried to eat it today with this one and the smell just grossed me out and I puked after taking 2 bites!!!! FIsh is sooo touchy cause I am craving shrimp sooooo bad, but know pretty much to avoid raw fish in general!

  • Hey all, I'm just lurking from the TTC board. I also love tuna and fish of all kinds but unfortunately many of the major brands of tuna are packaged in cans that contain BPA (Consumer Reports did a test and found that it did in fact leach into the tuna).

I've done a ton of research on this because I love fish so much, and I've found a few companies that package tuna in BPA-free cans. My favorite is Wild Planet... they have both light and albacore (as well as sardines, yum!) in BPA-free cans. Vital Choice is another company that does tuna in BPA-free cans, but unfortunately their lids contain BPA so there may be some trace amounts (but still less than the big national brands). Both brands are available at Whole Foods or other natural-food stores but I usually buy Wild Planet online so I can stock up.

Anyways, these brands are more expensive but I think it's well worth it. Just throwing that out there in case anyone else is as freaked out about BPA as I am!

  • My doc told me to stay away from canned tuna--even the smallest amount due to mercury.
