Today is day 6 after giving birth and while I do have some milk, I don't feel like my milk has come in, if this makes any sense. They dont get full where I need to feed or pump, but when I do pump, I get about 1.5oz. I guess I imagined that my boobs would get huge and full and when I pumped that I would get more than I am getting, but then again, I have never done this before....
Re: How long did it take for your milk to come in?
i'm not breasfeeding but mine came in about 3 days after delivering and my breasts were double their size and definitely full. I'm sure whatever you are experiencing is normal though especially if you are getting something when you pump.
it's good you're getting milk out when you pump - is that after you nurse her?
how many wet/dirty diapers is she having? thats one of the best indicators of her getting enough. how's her weight gain?
with marion, i had what you are describing. i never really felt my milk came in. i did end up struggling wth low supply with her, but that was due to several issues. this go round thoughh, it was very clear when my milk came in.

I think it took almost a week or maybe even close to two weeks for me to be convinced that it had come in but even at that, I never had a noticeable doubling in size from engorgement or any pain that you usually hear about.
We had to supplement for a few weeks because my supply just wasn't where it needed to be and she wasn't gaining enough but we were able to EBF after a few weeks my supply built up. If she's gaining weight, that's a great indicator..and you're getting something when you pump, so that's a great sign too.
Kellymom.com is a very helpful resource.
I never got that super full feeling. With #1, it took about 5 days until I really noticed milk. With #2, my milk came in by day 2 (but it's common for it to come in earlier the 2nd time around).
When and why are you pumping? If you want to establish a good supply, lay off the pump unless you need it for relief and just nurse as often as possible for a couple weeks. I know you are probably wanting to prepare for someone else to give her a bottle, but don't let that get in the way of letting your body regulate.
Like PP said, wet / dirty diapers and weight gain are the best indicators. Your body will never give as much from a pump as your baby can get. Babies are efficient milk getters. A machine just can't compare. I had fat, healthy EBF babies but never pumped more than 3-4 oz at a time, even well in to the later months.

This! Do not pump, NURSE NURSE NURSE. My milk came in on day 4 and I felt it. Also do skin to skin. Get the baby down to her diaper and place your baby on your bare chest and cover with a blanket. I do this as well and we recommend it to our mom's in the NICU for milk supply and bonding. If you are wanting to create some stash of milk for a bottle I would really wait at least a month and pump after you have nursed. If you also are going to give a bottle of formula make sure you are pumping in place of that. Breastfeeding is a supply and demand thing. The breastfeeding board has a lot of tips. I would not recommend opening up the posts with low supply in the heading. Those always scare me. Also do you have access to a Lactation consultant? They are wonderful people. Good Luck!
I am not sure what day it was, but I never had a feeling when it "came in". I heard so many people say that you would feel it but I never did. I don't think I pumped until DS was a few weeks old but I could tell from his diaper output that he was ok. I didn't have an oversupply but I would start leaking after a few hours so I knew I was producing.
